Completing the Learning Cycle – and Beyond
One of the most useful models I have found for understanding the learning cycle is the model described by Thomas Gordon as the “conscious competence learning stage model”. What I plan to do in this article is describe some of the “symptoms” of each part of the cycle, what learners need in this stage and give some practical illustrations.

Trent's Reid to head parent firm Tesco’s China biz
MUMBAI: Gordon Reid - the chief operating officer, who oversaw the expansion of Trent’s Star Bazaar retail outlets - is returning to his parent firm Tesco to head its Chinese operations. According to an official Trent release, Mr Reid’s India stint was part of a franchise arrangement with partner Tesco, and he is now moving back. The company said his replacement at Trent will be announced soon. Trent officials that ET spoke to felt that managing director Noel Tata may opt for international expertise until Star Bazaar strengthens its operational set-up in the country. Mr Reid took over at Trent in 2008 after Tesco inked a deal with the retail arm of the salt-to-software Tata Group.

Talent Development and The Wheel of Becoming
In the Buddhist belief, the Wheel of Becoming is a representation of life, death, and rebirth. The energy produced by one’s past actions (karma) are paid forward into future outcomes. Practitioners can determine their place within the concentric circles of the wheel, which delineate the various realms of being (see the graphic above). In talent management terms, think of the Wheel of Becoming as transitioning from one level of personal development to rebirth at a higher level. There are many models of human development (see Jane Lovinger’s “Stages of Ego Development”, or Robert Kegans “The Evolving Self” to name but two). One that fits neatly with the concept of Wheel of Becoming, however, is “The Leadership Pipeline” by Charan, Drodder, and Noel.
