The Coffee King: Howard Schultz is Born
| |
| “I wanted to be in charge of my own destiny,” says Howard Schultz. “It may be a weakness in me: I'm always wondering what I'll do next. Enough is never enough.” Schultz used this weakness to his advantage, taking the U.S. by storm with his vision of a coffee shop the likes of which the country had never seen before. Today, as a so-called ‘third home’, Starbucks has revolutionized not only the coffee industry but also society at large. |

Howard Schultz Bio
| |
| The Howard Schultz bio is not necessarily a story of innovation. After all, Howard Schultz was not the first person to ever think of establishing gourmet coffee bars, where coffee was served in cups, not beans, and people could come to meet and relax; he had gotten the idea after visiting Milan, Italy, on a family vacation. Nor was Howard Schultz the original founder of Starbucks; he built upon the success of three men and their coffeehouse in Seattle, Washington. |

A Modern Hermit
| |
| Jan Opdyke gave me her story of living alone as an entrepreneur, deep in the woods of Michigan. She not only poses as a model for a way to live and work, she also is the person who typed my Ph.D. dissertation back when we were classmates at The University of Michigan. The year was 1977. Without her help, I could not have gotten my doctoral degree on time. |

Hmmm!
| |
| The Sunday New York Times had a special section called "Education Life." One article, "Career U.," describes some of the changes we might expect in university education. For example, the president of the University of Michigan was surprised (to put it mildly) when she learned five years ago that 10% of incoming freshmen, some 600, had started their own businesses while in high school. She and her colleagues responded by creating about 100 entrepreneurship courses. The article tickles our imagination by describing a few of the more inventive new master's programs:

At that time, I joined the writer's club in the university hopefully to gain some experience in writing. We wrote and published a tiny entertainment magazine for our fellow peers and undergraduates in the whole university. |

Americans' Unhealthy Lifestyle Is the Leading Cause of Death
| |
| The leading cause of death in America is not heart disease, cancer, stroke or diabetes. It is the unhealthy lifestyle that most Americans are addicted to which is the true cause. A study by Mathew Reeves, a Michigan State University epidemiologist finds that only 3% of Americans maintain a healthy lifestyle.
