A New Trend in Web Marketing Capturing the Attention of the Novice Web User
| |
| In our work as usability consultants we have seen an interesting trend on the Web. This trend has to do with the increase in novice users learning to get their needs met via the Internet. These users have decided they finally need to go online to get information or buy products and services. The novice user has found that there is now enough benefit to the Internet that they should take the time and energy to get out of their comfort zone and get online.

A Silver Century Is Colouring Our Labour Markets
| |
| We are on the cusp of a huge change and yet only a few can see it. According to The Conference Board of Canada’s most recent research finding, “A rising proportion of old and “very old” (those 80 years of age or more) citizens will be the defining demographic trend in most countries. A second trend, the rapid fall in fertility rates, will create societies with fewer young people. In Western countries, the labour surplus of the last quarter of the 20th century will become history in the first quarter of the next century.” Indeed, the 21st century will be the silver century worldwide. |

Video – the Next Wave of Small Business Marketing?
| |
| The current small business marketing trend is the addition of video to things like websites, promotional DVDs and blogs. Think of the explosion of You Tube – more people watch You Tube across the world each day than people watch TV.
The cutting edge of the trend is live self-broadcast TV streamed from your website. Think of it like your own ongoing TV program. One of the gurus in this is a guy who talks about wine – Gary Vaynerchuck. A guy who is passionate about wine talks about it in laypersons terms – complete with plastic character toys. It is out there, loud, real and he out-rates many of the top US TV shows.

Tips On Writing With Personality
| |
| There has been a major shift in how people buy things and relate to companies in the past 3 years and this trend is brilliant for small business. The trend is away from ‘buying a brand” to “buying the person behind the brand”.
We have been disillusioned by big business – so now we are looking to know the faces behind the names of the brand. We want to know their personalities, what makes them tick and can we trust them to do what they say they will.

Be a Positive Outlier and Change Your World
| |
|
When you think of it, George Washington was an outlier and so were characters such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Galileo, Mother Teresa, Joan of Arc and Nelson Mandela.
Are you a positive outlier? When an outlier is removed from a set of data, its influence is gone. In your sphere of life or work, can your absence be noticeable? Would people wish you were still available to affect their work or life in a positive way? You don't need talent to be an outlier. You need vision of the future you want, decisions to get you started on a path toward your vision and actions that bring you results. |

Are You Rude on The Internet? It Can Hurt Your Business.
| |
| I don’t know about you but I’ve noticed a disturbing trend occurring both on the Internet and in real life. The trend is rudeness. I watched a taping of Oprah tonight (see the CNN breakdown of this show here) that enlightened me to a book, a doctor and a quote that made the light bulbs go off. Dr. PM Forni wrote a book called, “Choosing Civility: The Twenty-Five Rules of Considerate Conduct” and although I have not read it yet, you bet it will be in my next book store purchase. |

Are you Re-trenching or Re-imagining
| |
| Rumor has it that the economy is slowly slowly slowly recovering in a few disparate markets. Employment specifically NOT being one of them in any noticeable way. The good news is that no matter the situation we find ourselves, we are getting smarter about how we utilize our resources, especially relationships, education, time, and money. Call it re-imagining. Like many of us, you are likely alternating between the genuine good feeling of wising up about your resources and being paralyzed with fear and indecisiveness, unable to decide what to do, thus doing nothing. This might be defined as re-trenching. Hmm, feel that tightening in your chest? Don't forget to breath. |
