Facebook Connect vs OpenID — Which will win?
| |
| It’s been a few days since my last post and I must say that I have calmed down considerably since my meeting on Monday. Several things that I got to do over the last few days made the week completely worth it.
Firstly, I was able to give a Social Media 101 crash course to my colleagues. I always enjoy doing presentations and when I can help someone, it makes it that much more rewarding. Just to let you readers know, my door is always open if you have any questions. |

What should I do with my tax refund?
| |
| Do you remember the good old days when spending our tax refund frivolously wasn’t such a big deal? Our jobs were stable, house values seemed to be on a never-ending climb and the stock market was booming. Things were looking pretty good. Well, we are all feeling a little less wealthy these days; our portfolios have been beaten up, the wealth in our homes have taken a blow and on top of all that, we are worried about our jobs and the stability of our income. There is a lot of insecurity or fear out there and so spending our tax refund on a great vacation or a new flat screen TV may not be the most financially savvy thing to do. |

LTV: The Key to the Underwater Mortgage
| |
| If you're wondering whether or not you're in an underwater mortgage, the key is to understand your loan to value, or LTV, ratio. The LTV reflects how much you owe as a percentage of the total value of your house.
So, for example, if you originally took out a $130,000 mortgage on a house that was appraised at $150,000, your LTV ratio would be 87%. In other words, you would then owe 87% of what the house was actually worth-a win for you once the mortgage was paid off, provided that the property value didn't change. Which, of course, never happens, does it?

Choice More than Chance Determines Our Circumstance
| |
| The day was a winter wonderland as our family drove through the country to a Christmas open house at a friend's home. A fresh snowfall had left the trees, houses, and barns covered with a inch of magical white powder. The day was cold, but in the brilliant sunshine the snow sparkled across the fields and glittered as it wrapped the buildings and trees in it's twinkling blanket. It was like driving through a Currier and Ives painting. At the open house, I babbled on about the wonder and beauty of our 30-minute drive through such an enchanted postcard scene. Another guest who just arrived from a 90-minute drive shut me up when he snarled, "Some winter wonderland! The slush and spray from the highway was constantly smearing our windshield. It drove me nuts. I hate driving in that crap." |

The “adjacent possibility”
| |
| A few years ago biologist and researcher Stuart Kauffman came up with a term he called “the adjacent possible.” It’s a complex theory but here’s a simple way to look at it. Think of being in a house that magically expands with every door you open. You walk into a room and see three more doors leading out. Once you open one of those doors you enter another room with another three doors leading to yet new rooms. Keep opening doors and eventually you’ll realize you’re in an expanding palace. |
