“It's my job for Oracle – the number two software company in the world – to become the number one software company in the world,” says Ellison. “My job, is to build better than the competition, sell those products in the marketplace, and eventually supplant Microsoft and move from being number two to number one.”

Five Questions that Will Let You Spot a VC Bluffer

Many -- okay, most -- VCs aren't paying attention during pitches. Either they've already decided they don't like the deal and haven't told you, or they are distracted by email, or something else, but the upshot is the same: They are bluffing, so they start spewing non sequitur questions.

Self-awareness: key to growth and change

To become self-aware is to be able to notice how you really feel, think and behave. It is a self-help skill that can be learned and which, when responsibly developed and often with skilled help, enables you to use a powerful mechanism naturally available to you to enhance you life and work as you choose. It is a natural mechanism, yet most of us have through our life experience cut ourselves off from truly accessing what we have within in us to make our lives really more effective and fulfilling of our potential.

A Marketing Approach To Assess Training

| Imagine that you have been asked to implement a new enterprise-wide training program to ensure that each employee masters a new skill and can successfully demonstrate competency within a month. Maybe you have five employees, maybe you have 50,000, but the idea is that all employees have to master the skill. Would you ignore data that told you which employees knew the information already? What about data that told you how your employees learned most efficiently? How about data that told you what to change about your current learning programs to make them more effective? Of course you wouldn't, you would welcome this information with open arms. Without this information, your training program will never achieve its full value.

Lesson #4: Break Through That Wall

“I have had all of the disadvantages required for success,” says Ellison. “There were lots of times, especially in the early days, that were very, very difficult.” From being given up for adoption by his birth mother to losing his adoptive mother to cancer to dropping out of school, Ellison could have been the poster boy for adolescent angst. But, whether it was rebounding in school or bring Oracle back from the brink, Ellison managed to find the determination that he needed to press on.

SMBs certainly don't lack choices when it comes to ERP systems, with tech giants Microsoft, Oracle and SAP, among others, introducing systems geared toward their needs. But blogger Keith Meyer says that, for many small shops, a whiteboard will work just as well -- better, in fact.

| In this second of our two part review of the April 9 announcement by Oracle that they are now going to offer their Strategic Sourcing and Sourcing Optimization applications on a Software as a Service (SaaS) or on-demand basis, I will focus on the more technical elements of their decision. Move Into China By Emptoris A Bold Act Based On Solid Research, or A Reckless Gamble Based on Global Market Share Aspirations?

Chinese enterprise resource planning (ERP) vendors have been able to defend the challenge from global ERP leaders such as SAP and Oracle. This article seeks possible reasons for major international ERP vendors not being able to dominate the Chinese ERP market. Taking an ensemble view of technology, we conceptualize ERP systems as being embedded in complex social contexts, which heavily influence ERP implementation and use. Based on this conceptualization, we contend that a historical perspective and a social-cultural perspective can offer a rich understanding on ERP implementations in China.

Leadership Insight: Skin in the Game; Are You Interested or Invested

| Most often attributed to the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffet, the phrase “skin in the game” probably originated in a California newspaper in the summer of 1912.
Regardless of origin, the phase has been quoted millions of times in baseball dugouts, football huddles, board rooms and corporate meeting rooms. One of the more famous recent uses of the phrase came from Barrack Obama prior to his being sworn in as president of the United States. The president-elect was describing the shared sacrifice needed by all Americans to resurrect the economy.
