| In the game of chess, the queen is the most powerful piece in the game. She can move any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally as long as her path is unobstructed. However, at the beginning of the game, the influence of the queen is restricted because of the configuration of the pieces. It seems that in 1848 as Ireland was attempting to break away from England, nine young Irish rebels were captured and sentenced to death. As they were brought before the queen for punishment, Queen Victoria could not bear to have them executed, so she sent them to England's prison colony in Australia.
