King of the Online Jungle: The Early Years of Jeff Bezos
| |
| When McKenzie Tuttle walked down the aisle to say “I do” to her husband-to-be Jeff Bezos, she thought she was marrying into a secure future. At the time, Bezos was in his 30s and serving as Vice President of an investment firm in New York City. It was a job he liked – and one that paid well – but Bezos couldn’t shake this crazy idea from his head; he wanted “to create the world’s most customer-centric company, the place where you can find and buy anything you want online.” That stable life McKenzie once had was almost immediately turned upside down when Bezos decided to launch Amazon.com. As fate would have it, Bezos’ small garage startup would go on to become one of the leading e-commerce sites in the world, with revenues exceeding $8 billion. |

Management Courses
| |
| It’s a big, scary world out there, especially for the entrepreneur wanna be who has had little to no business experience or training. Entrepreneurs are known for their willingness to take risks, for their innovation, and not necessarily for their academic record. Indeed, many of the most successful CEOs in the world are those who dropped out of university or even high school in order to follow their dreams. But for those of you who aren’t sure you are the next Richard Branson, a high school dropout so determined to be his own boss that he is now a billionaire, there are other options. One of those options is to take management courses. |

A Case Study in Success
| |
| A PERSONAL STORY
Like Michael Jordan, I have achieved everything important in my life and work without any goal-setting. I never wrote down that I would be a professional speaker or author of a book.
My background would suggest that what I have accomplished in life is impossible. I was raised on the Navajo Indian reservation. I was the only Caucasian boy in my high school senior class, and most of my peers didn't like me because of the color of my skin-and because of what the bilagonas (white men) did to their ancestors. They held an inherent anger toward me, and I was bullied almost every day. |

It’s Never Too Late!
| |
| In May of 1983, Helen Hill, age 95, received her high school diploma. She was absolutely ecstatic. When she finished high school 76 years earlier, she and her five classmates did not receive formal diplomas because the school was so much in debt they could not afford them. When she received her belated diploma, Mrs. Hill was thrilled. |

Why everybody lives by selling something – part 2
| |
| For some time now I have been testing the concept of ‘everybody lives by selling something' with almost everyone I meet, including senior leadership teams (comprising of HR, Finance, IT, Operations, and Sales), primary school teachers and administration staff, senior banking risk professionals, and health professionals (including my podiatrist and GP).
I am curious to see how people respond and how they see themselves in relation to the concept of ‘everybody lives by selling something'.
Often when one mentions the words ‘selling' or ‘sales' you can see people visibly recoil in disgust, with many immediately saying something like "I don't sell" or "It's not my job". |

| |
| As teenagers mature into their senior year of high school, many parents begin to feel more comfortable about letting them drink alcohol. But new research from brain scientists and parenting experts suggests loosening the reins on drinking may not be a good idea in the long run.
