Matching the Right Type of Salesperson to Your Customers
| |
| The most successful sales managers recognise that all good salespeople must have certain vital skills and motivations. The degree and type required, however, will vary according to what customers need in order to use the product or service. The best strategy is achieved by matching salesperson skills, focus, and motivation to best serve these needs.
Market and customer analysis by The HR Chally Group has identified four distinctly different types of customers. They, in turn, respond most positively to four different types of salespeople:
- Closers
- Consultants
- Relationship
- Display (Friendly Order Takers) |

Sell Me This Pencil
| |
| Were you ever being interviewed for a job when the interviewer said to you, “Sell me this pencil?” What did you say? What was he looking for? Why do people still do this? Without pondering the sociological rational of the interview process, quite simply he or she was just trying to find out how well you can sell, how you present yourself and/or how well you think on your feet. |

Lesson #3: When the Market is Limited, Push the Limits
| |
| “The idea gradually dawned on me that what we were doing was not merely making dry plates, but that we were starting out to make photography an everyday affair,” said Eastman, “to make the camera as convenient as the pencil.” |

The Smart Alternative to Layoffs
| |
| The slowing economy has sent many of my clients back to the drawing board to take a sharp pencil to next year's budget. Small businesses run lean and mean most of the time, so there aren't many significant line items available for reduction… until you get to payroll. |

In the Thrall of Procrastination
| |
| The last weeks of August are bittersweet for me as I say farewell to summer, my favourite season. I experience September as a month of new beginnings, likely harking back to my school years – but without the new erasers and pencil crayons. In this month’s newsletter I share some insights about to-do lists prompted by an impromptu closet makeover. I hope you enjoy the results of cleaning out your to-list and getting it ready for the ‘new year’ as much as I enjoyed cleaning out my closet. |

Importance of Salary Survey for the Employee and Employer
| |
| Salary information is one of the deepest secrets of the labor market. However, today many large organizations, management consultancies and websites are conducting salary surveys and coming out with reports on compensation and benefits that helps both employers and employees take a right decision. Such surveys can be online as well as offline (paper pencil ones) and are generally done for the purpose of comparability. |

Business Casual and the Psychology of Office Attire or Who Cares What you Wear to Work as Long as you Perform?
| |
| No, it shouldn’t matter if a woman wears a tight, pencil skirt or a man wears Birkenstocks and Bermudas as long as s/he excels at work. But know that to some people, it does. Here's why. |

Over Coming Price Discounting!
| |
| If you are in sales, you will have come across the expression "Can you sharpen your pencil?" or something similar - meaning that they like what you have on offer but don't want to pay the asking price for it. Your customer is asking for price discounting, or price haggling.
This analogy of the 3 legged stool has served me well in my sales career. If it makes sense to you, try it for yourself. It certainly presents an extremely visual image. |

Hold a KTC
| |
| What's a KTC? I have 5 children and one of the best tools I used when parenting them was holding a KTC. I used to be the parent that TOLD the kids what to do. I learned quickly that NO ONE likes to be told what to so - whether they are two or ninety two. So what's a KTC? A Kitchen Table Conference. When one was called, everyone knew to arrive at the table with a pencil and paper because solutions were going to get made for any challenge we were facing at the time. Whether it was how to keep the house clean, show more respect for each other, improve their diet, get better grades in school, or decide on a vacation.
The number one rule about holding a KTC is GREEN LIGHTING. What that means is when someone voices any opinion or suggestion, it must be accepted and written down. If you "red light" an idea, you might be condemning that creati |

The 5% Challenge
| |
| I am very intentional about my use of time, working from a schedule that I create weeks in advance. But that does not mean that I work head down for 8 hours without taking a break. I once worked with a high-level financial executive that told me for 26 years at his previous company he had worked “head down, pencil up.” And he was dreadfully out of touch with currents trends and opportunities.
