The Nine Biggest Myths of the Workplace by Penelope Trunk
I liked Penelop Trunk's interview so much that I asked her for more material. Here's her list of the nine biggest workplace myths:

Pragmatic Optimism
Most people consider me an optimist because I laughingly state that I would take my last two dollars and buy a money belt. I'd even go after Moby Dick in a rowboat, and take the tartar sauce with me! However, I've got to confess that I don't hold a candle to the ultimate lady optimist who lived in a retirement home.

The Terrific Power of Optimism in Sports Success
Wise old Abe Lincoln described a pessimist as someone who “finds difficulty in every opportunity,” while an optimist is someone who “finds opportunity in every difficulty.” This principle is particularly true in athletics. Much research has shown that athletes and teams that have an optimistic interpretation of their performance (especially after losing) will consistently outperform those who view their performance and losses from a negative, pessimistic perspective.

Who’s Recovering the Quickest – Is it You?
We hear that the recession is on the wane and that there may be growth this year, albeit with high unemployment plaguing us for a while. Notwithstanding that you as the self-employed entrepreneur may not yet be feeling a recovery, it is happening.

Optimism: the Key to Living Longer & Happier
People who are successful in life measure high on assessments of optimistic attitudes. It would be easy to presume they are optimistic because they are successful, but there is enough research to show that the optimism comes first.

EXTEND YOUR BOUNDARIES
Strong boundaries are an essential element in creating your perfect work-life balance because they help you make peace and space for what you really want in your life. Boundaries are the personal rules you have for what other people may and may not do to or around you.

Imagine All the People
“Imagine all the people living life in peace” sang John Lennon in the 70’s and it’s still being played today. Well, imagine employees working everyday in harmony and peace and happily contributing to a healthy and highly profitable organization. Sounds like wishful idealistic thinking from the 70’s, right? But recent studies show that this is possible. The global consulting group Towers Perrin has published their annual global study of employee engagement, which shows just how motivated people are to perform at their best.

Phenomenological Perspective: That which you believe will become your reality.
Finding balance between work and life, begins with deciding that you want to live a balanced life and becoming aware of that which needs to change. The power of the mind and the things we allow ourselves to focus on can become the pivot point our lives revolve around. Discover ways to release your mind from all its worries and change your perspective to a more positive light. To really let go of things, we must let go with our mind first. Then our heart can follow suit.

Effect of Optimism and Commitment on the Sales Force
I'm not an optimist or a pessimist. I tend to be a be a realist. Relating the aforementioned quotes to selling, I believe that optimists find it difficult to challenge people. I can easily slide over to the pessimistic side when necessary, like when it's time to debrief a salesperson on a recent call. It's difficult to punch holes or question a salesperson's account of a call if you are an optimist. Optimists often become overexcited and set unrealistic expectations about the likely outcome of an opportunity. I believe you must be able to slide back and forth between optimism and pessimism. Get yourself motivated and excited, be realistic about what's happening, and challenge people when what you hear doesn't sound right.

Leaders are Learned Optimists
Effective leaders are "unreasonable" optimists. Optimists refuse to live in "the real world." They live in a world of hope and possibilities. They see an opportunity in every calamity. The pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity. Optimists excite and arouse others to action by helping them see, believe in, and reach for what could be.
