IFC and Microfinance in Africa: Building Strong Commercial Institutions
The International Finance Corporation (IFC)-the private sector arm of the World Bank Group-has $4 billion invested in various kinds of financial institutions in 88 countries: including banks, leasing companies, credit rating agencies, and pension funds. IFC also has $256 million invested in 56 microfinance institutions in 38 countries, reaching more than 1.3 million clients. Institutions in Southern Europe, Central Asia, and Latin America currently comprise the lion's share of this portfolio, but Africa is a growing emphasis as well.

1.15 Building an employment agenda: Working Out of Poverty
Employment, and the promotion of enterprise that creates it, remains the most effective route to poverty eradication. The objective of full employment is essential – an issue on which the European Union has given political leadership. Most policy prescriptions, however, do not view job creation as an explicit objective of economic and social policies, but rather as a hopedfor result of sound macroeconomic policies. At the ILO, we believe that sound macroeconomic policies are essential for desired growth, but such growth must be employment-intensive to effectively reduce poverty. While the main challenge remains at the national level, development cooperation has a role to play. Donor countries and institutions, especially international financial institutions, should build this in as an integral part of their vision.

4.1 Institutions, markets and development: Working Out of Poverty
One of the leading thinkers about the importance of institutions and rules to making markets work for development, Nobel laureate Professor Douglass North, has explained that societies evolve institutions to “reduce uncertainty by providing a structure to everyday life”. He argues that this is essential to organizing the productive division of labour and that “institutions affect the performance of the economy by their effect on the costs of exchange and production”. He also stresses that many of the rules guiding daily behaviour are informal and that effective institutions for governing markets are a blend of socially accepted norms and laws underpinned by shared values.

Office Politics: Survival of the Savvy
Tales of political sabotage, power plays and turf wars are part of any organization’s history. Nonetheless, political competence is the one skill everyone wishes to have more of — but no one talks about it.

The Political Failures of the Baby Boomers, and the Challenges for the Next Generation
The Boomers' failures are distributed uniformly from Right to Left. But given the liberal-leaning Boomers' original rise from the 1960s counterculture, their weak-kneed absorption into the partisan political establishment is most ironic. The generation that fought for free speech and the right to question authority now enforces strict political correctness and quashes political dissent from their tenured posts in academia.

An Iron String: The Power of Trust
Trust pervades nearly every aspect of our daily lives. It is fundamental in the healthy functioning of all of our relationships with others. In today’s uncertain climate, it is not surprising that study after study shows a decline in the trust level individuals have of business and political leaders and institutions. If lack of trust is an issue which causes you concern in your leadership, what can you do to manage perceptions of trust in an unstable and slippery environment? This article provides 12 actionable steps.

Tender Writing
Numerous organisations and institutions require various services and products that they may not have direct access so they need to acquire the services of other companies to provide these goods them. In order for these organisations and institutions to access the best services at the best price, service providers are required to present tenders outlining their services and their costs. Tender writing and proposal writing are therefore vital skills for companies who wish to provide services and products to other organisations and institutions.

How Much Of Our Lives Will We Let Them Take Over?
Sometimes I really have to wonder about the "political correctness" of California, one of my home states. In fact, in California, "political correctness" is really just a politically-correct term for "liberal insanity." And these days, it seems the state's PC Police have a real thing about the U.S. flag.

Poltical Savvy and Employees
Political savvy has little to do with one’s place in the hierarchy. All employees can use political savvy regardless of their position in the organization. The truth is you can engage in several activities without considering yourself a “political person.” For example: - relationship building - valuing diversity - persuasive communication - information gathering - networking - team involvement

Progressivism Isn't Progress, VII
I still hear otherwise-brilliant people (including the erudite Newt Gingrich and talented talker Glenn Beck) refer to this "progressivism of the right," claiming that it leads to fascism as inexorably as "progressivism of the left" leads to communism. That's wrong. It's true that progressivism is a disease that's infected all major American institutions of influence, including both political parties, but in fact progressivism only "progresses" in one direction: toward the left, toward big government, and toward totalitarian statism....
