Leadership Myth #1 - Great Leaders Are More Intelligent
| |
| Many people believe great leaders are more intelligent than poor leaders. There are so many examples that debunk this theory that it is hard to pick just a few. Raw intelligence is not correlated with outstanding leadership characteristics. In fact, if you drew a correlation line showing IQ on one axis and success as a leader on the other, it would not be a straight line. There is a maximum point beyond which higher IQ is actually a predictor of lower success as a leader. |

Ideas for Political Survival
| |
| There is an old saying “Too soon old – too late smart.” During my long career in a large organization, I somehow managed to do some pretty bonehead things politically. I will never be someone who is politically brilliant because I am far too outspoken. But I have learned some things and want to pass on an idea to others.

Politics and Leadership...The Contradiction of Purpose!
| |
| It is the rare supervisor that we also call our leader. Someone who inspires us beyond our own perceived capability is not typical. In today's "self-focused" work environment, employees are drawn to a leader that seems to inspire a "larger" purpose. Maybe this phenomenon is rooted in a generation of Americans that has an entitled view of the world...they are owed something because of their very existence. Or, maybe our own need to make things better for our children has caused them to expect so much as young adults. It really doesn't matter as things are as they are and the reality of truth is what we must ponder this holiday season. |

Why DO Idiots Eat Their Young? And, Is it a Bad thing?
| |
| If we compare the typical "idiot" in business to the starving family patriarch in the cruelest of winters, interesting parallels start to surface. Consider the challenge of feeding a family to the typical business leader that must financially feed his or her team. Imagine the bad winter as analogous to the challenging business climate and the story starts to sizzle. |

The Ole Boy Network Still Has Teeth
| |
| I'm not a sexist, and I'm not a bra-burning feminist. I am a realist. That's why I can say that the ole boy network still unequivocally affects relationship building in the corporate hallowed halls ... not so much in the entrepreneurial ranks.

Obama’s “Birther” PR Mistake
| |
| If there was a video that showed President Obama being born in Hawaii and that video was released to the media, it wouldn’t matter a bit. The Birther movement revolves around accusations and diversions and you do not (and more importantly you cannot) battle that type of attack, at least via the media, with facts. The Birthers are akin to a religious cult; you are not going to weaken their faith with something as cumbersome as reality. Obama’s strategic PR mistake was that he began to take them too seriously. He then took them on by trying to put out fire with gasoline. |

Seven Essential Principles for Managing Power and Politics
| |
| There are seven essential principles for managing power and politics in organizations. They are based on the philosophy of Niccolo Machiavelli, the classic theorist in the field. Not even skilled and relatively sophisticated people can succeed in management -- and be seen as leaders -- without internalizing these principles, although they may have minor short-term successes. In the long run, they will be undermined because they can't build and keep alliances, protect themselves from the grapevine or influence top management. |

Taboo Topics: Talking Politics in the Office
| |
| Conventional wisdom says not to talk about sex, politics and religion in the office. Workplace Etiquette: The Political Savvy Individual
| |
| At one time, it was assumed that office politics were played primarily by supervisors and managers who were attempting to climb the ladder of success, and executives who were still either climbing or trying to maintain. Not only are office politics tougher today, but the stakes are at their highest. In an era of organizations trimming down to reduce costs, corporate takeovers, downsizings, and mergers the use of political savvy is needed for survival.

Thought:
• There are big Ps (Politics) which equate to the politics of Congress, major corporations, etc.
• There are also little Ps which equates to the environment in which you work.
Both are important. |

Two Views Of America's Future
| |
| Believe it or not, I never cared much for politics. It always seemed like the political machinations of running the country were happening someplace far away, that people who cared deeply about such things were "on it," and that there wasn't much a single person could do to change things, anyway. Besides, I was generally too busy raising kids, running a business, or leading a team to give politics much time or thought.... |

Political Savvy - What you can do!
| |
| When office politics and political savvy are mentioned, many think of selfish, deceitful, deceptive, sneaky, conniving individuals who are doing things like:
-- Snitching to management
-- Faking a romantic involvement
-- Lying or covering the truth
-- Playing dishonest games
-- Discounting another's opinion or idea
-- Back stabbing
True, there are people who do exhibit these behaviors. The person who practices such devious politics does so at considerable risk. Practicing unsavory office politics may lead to being unwanted, in dead-end jobs, fired, sued or even punched in the face. However, to ignore office politics is to ignore those underlying forces that account for the differences in success and cooperation with coworkers, your supervisor and management. |

The Conscience Of A Restorationist, IV
| |
| What's your project? You could do something related to the media, or you could start a business, or you could write a book. How about politics? Most of us never think of ourselves as "political" in our mindset (the progressives are much more into that)... but it's true that evil will flourish when good people do nothing. So some of us need to take on a project in politics, in order to aid the restoration of America. Here are some thought-starters.... |
