| The economic recovery is on its way according to the animals around my house. And, they seem to be trying to let me know just that. I recall how my childhood dog got under the back porch steps if a storm was coming. If she paced around a lot and whimpered, you could count on a hard rain. She was never wrong. Nature seems to be able to foretell the future.

The Wisdom of the Snapping Turtle

| When I was 8 years old, during one of my journeys into the woods, I successfully captured a
rather large snapping turtle. I immediately brought him back to my grandparents' house, selected
an appropriate box, and made him my official pet. As I was being particularly quiet, my
grandfather came onto the back porch to determine what mischief I might be pursuing. I showed
him my prize turtle and explained that it was now my pet.

| As I sat on my front porch this morning, reading the paper and enjoying my first cup of coffee for the day, I could not help but feel a certain sense of gratitude for the freedom I take for granted every day.
I have had the privilege of living in this great country for the last 9 years, and even though I am fiercely proud to be Canadian, feelings of patriotism and adoration for my new homeland were overwhelming this morning.
After spending the weekend doing the normal “get ready for summer” stuff around the house and enjoying the last three days of family barbecues and abundance – it really hit home. |

They Blinded Us With "Science!"

| I finally found my true calling the other day, when I had the sad fortune to find a dead bunny rabbit just off the front porch of our country home. I conducted a thorough examination of the bunny's carcass before properly disposing of it - by which I mean, I looked at it from a safe and comfortable distance. I could not see what might've caused the bunny's demise, so of course I concluded that the poor wretch paid the ultimate price for the sinful climate change caused by humankind.... |
