Creating Happy Companies is Good Business
| |
| There is no doubt that business success depends on highly motivated employees.
Why do so many companies have uninspiring leaders and uninspired employees who plod along with little - or the wrong - motivation? Why are corporate decisions still being made for the short term, undermining morale and jeopardizing business success? |

Effect of Optimism and Commitment on the Sales Force
| |
| I'm not an optimist or a pessimist. I tend to be a be a realist. Relating the aforementioned quotes to selling, I believe that optimists find it difficult to challenge people. I can easily slide over to the pessimistic side when necessary, like when it's time to debrief a salesperson on a recent call. It's difficult to punch holes or question a salesperson's account of a call if you are an optimist. Optimists often become overexcited and set unrealistic expectations about the likely outcome of an opportunity. I believe you must be able to slide back and forth between optimism and pessimism. Get yourself motivated and excited, be realistic about what's happening, and challenge people when what you hear doesn't sound right. |

The Optimistic Sales Professional
| |
| Sales is a demanding profession. Top performers know that to sustain a high level of performance, they need to keep fit and well - both physically and psychologically. An increasing body of research is showing that keeping an optimistic outlook, and having the physical energy to meet the demands of working in sales are critical to a sales person's effectiveness, success and overall well-being. Something many of us know intuitively, however it good to have it validated.
Managing and overcoming setbacks is key to succeeding in anything. In sales we are tested everyday. Without a sense of optimism it would make getting up to face each day that much harder.
So what is Optimism? |

Positive Thinking
| |
| Just what can positive thinking do? To be candid, some people have given positive thinking a bad name. I can't stand to hear some gung-ho individual say that with positive thinking you can just do "anything." If you think about that one for a moment, you recognize the absurdity of it. As a ridiculous example, I'm a positive thinker, but I could never slam-dunk a basketball or perform major surgery - or even minor surgery - on anyone and expect that person to survive. Nate Newton, the 300-plus pound lineman for the Dallas Cowboys, is positive, optimistic and outgoing but he'd be a complete failure as a jockey or a ballet dancer. |

Defining Belief
| |
| Psychology, as well as other practices relating to human mentality, has long held that belief is the most basic form of conscious thought. The issue of whether belief is actually a mental state remains the subject of debate. Nevertheless, in psychology, before a subject can learn any new information, the belief system must first be addressed. This allows the "proposition", or the object of the belief, to be learned.
