Private Equity Lessons for the Startup or Entrepreneurial Company
The November issue of the Harvard Business Review poses a tough question to the management of public companies: “What If Private Equity Sized Up Your Business?” The question comes on the heals of recent revelations that public companies are facing increased scrutiny by Private Equity funds both favorably as, for example, an acquisition target or adversely, as a mismanaged and underperforming asset in need of reform. The article goes on to identify five trends that develop when Private equity gets involved. The purpose of this article is to highlight the premises upon which these five trends are based. Understanding this premise will lend valuable insight and strategic fodder for Start-up or Entrepreneurial companies as well as seasoned businesses.

Time and Money
We’ve all heard the timeworn adage that Time is Money. Like most timeworn adages, this one— at its center—has a real practical truth for all of us. Most of us go to work each day and spend eight-to-ten hours or more in exchange for a paycheck. While many of us enjoy our jobs, if we are honest or even practical, we will admit that we are exchanging our time for someone else’s money. This makes sense to us in the professional area of our lives, but too many of us miss the time-and-money equation as it relates to our personal lives.

Taking Down Walls
Our walls or protective shields are the focus of this month’s article. The use of the word “protection” here is different than what would show up in an insurance policy, house alarm company, or in an article about practical ways to prevent physical harm. What is being explored here is the use of ‘protection’ in the feeling sense.

How to Stay Focused - 10 Practical Ways
The two elements I suggest are the foundation to long term focus are a clear vision and life purpose. Now that isn’t something you’re going to figure out over night and I’m a practical guy, so here are some other suggestions. These are 10 practical ways to stay focused.

Change Your Ways or Go Out of Business
Small business like delis, pizza shops, thrift stores and other shops will close their doors in this kind of economy. Large businesses aren't doing any better. Business owners that were previously making a good living off their great reputation and quality product must change their ways. The old saying, "If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got” doesn’t have much practical application during a recession. You won’t get what you’ve always got because you’ll go out of business! Read on for practical tips on changing your ways and staying in business.

A Timely Time Management System for Creative People
The Buffet system is practical and flexible, yet simple. It not only keeps me focused on what I have to do, I easily manage multiple projects and goals and have the action steps to get me there. A secondary benefit is that it gives me is a sense of satisfaction that comes from feeling like I am in control of my time (excellent for keeping moping at bay). A third and for me, the most important advantage is that it keeps me productive while maintaining enough flexibility to be creative. A fourth benefit is that it helps keep me in balance, a dicey proposition at the best of times. Fifthly, I can easily pick out my priorities when I have them laid out in front of me.

301 Redirects for SEO
Many still do not understand the impact of 301 Redirects or the proper time and place to use them. I hope to give an outline of when and where to use this often misunderstood technical issue within the larger "theory" of what is really just practical SEO common sense.

RIGHT THINGS BUILD YOU FOR LIFE TIME
Leaders are known for their strong character. Character is not what you have but it is what you are. This has a strong value. People like character but when it goes to deed and actions, they differ. They compromise with the logic that this all is ideology not practical. One has to be practical not ideological.

Common Sense and Success
We are all born with five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. These senses help us navigate our way through the world. They bring us delight in small things. They also warn us when danger threatens. However, I believe that we all have a sixth, and underused sense, our common sense. Your common sense helps you make the right decision in ambiguous situations -- but only if you use it. When I tell people that I'm the Common Sense Guy, people often come back with Will Rogers' saying, "Common sense isn't all that common." I disagree. I think that we all have innate common sense. It's a natural gift, just like our five other senses. We don't always use it though. If you are willing to let your common sense guide you today, you can use it as a guide tomorrow, the next day, next week and next month.

Window of Opportunity
In a practical sense, what this means is that you view tough economic times as providing you a unique window of opportunity to cut the non-profitable elements of your sales and marketing system away, to pare down to a dedicated and competent core, to sharpen the focus of every element of your system, and then to expand your market share so that you can weather the hard times and be stronger when the economy inevitably turns.
