An Eight-Step Process for Ensuring Your Acquisition and the Integration are a Success
Far too many companies make the mistake of acquiring another organization, only to attempt immediately to assimilate the new company into the original company’s existing processes, programs, and culture. The results for Africa, shown in table A5.1, suggest further that as income per capita increases, there is a tendency for African economies to experience improvement in their diversification processes. This is a very significant result and it is in line with other empirical evidence, (see Imbs and Wacziarg 2003), which shows that poor countries tend to diversify at first as their incomes rise, before they later begin to become more specialized. African countries also fit into this theory of the U-shaped stages of diversification.

Regional co-operation, using regional trade groupings or regional economic communities (RECs), has been a dominant feature in the development of trade policy since the end of the Second World War.

We may identify five main types or forms of regional integration, classifying them by a rising degree of intensity.

Benefits of Regional Economic Integration
Regional economic communities are formed because of the expected benefits from them. An important feature of the higher levels of integration is free trade among members.

Regional Economic Communities in Africa
Regional economic integration has a long history in Africa. The South African Customs Union (SACU) was established in 1910 while the East African Community (EAC) was set up in 1919. The East African Community collapsed in 1987 but is now being actively revived. Currently there are 14 regional economic communities in Africa.
