Making Business Personal

| One of the most common mistakes people make when building relationships for career success and revenue growth is treating business contacts differently than personal friends. Just think for a moment about the people you work with on a professional level who are also close personal friends. THE TOO SALESY PARADOX WHY PROFESSIONAL SERVICE PROVIDERS CANT SELL AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT
| |
| By John Doerr
The distress is obvious. The complaints are frequent. The clear disdain for the activity is surprisingly unfiltered. What are we talking about? Selling, or more specifically, selling professional services.
In conversation after conversation as I work with clients, conduct seminars, or network with my professional colleagues, I hear the same comments:
Selling conflicts with my values as a professional.
Selling gets in the way of building strong relationships.
You have to have it in your genes - like a used car salesman.
I don't sell professional services - I work with my clients to create the best solutions.
People won't respect me as a professional if I am selling to them.
I can't sell to them. What will they think of me?
It (selling) is not what we do around here.

When to say no to a deal. If you want grow say no!
| |
| Wait, before you say, "I did this really small job and it lead to a bigger one, so I never turn down a deal." If you want to think that way, it's OK, but if you want to get to the next level, you need to think differently. I have a very successful client in Hollywood that I work with, he hired me to help him make the jump to the elite level of 8 figure deals. I told him the same thing I'm telling you, say, "No to 80%." He was so challenged by this until I explained to him that the deals he was getting now were the ones turned down by the elite level 8 figure guys. If you want 8 figure deals you have think like an 8 figure guy and NOT take 6 figure deals. |
