Famous Hair Accessories-The Women Inventors Behind Them
The personal stories of the women inventors behind the TopsyTail, Hairdini, FanTail, and Whirl-a-Style. How did they get into such a unique business? What traits drive their success?

There are so many opportunities how can one choose?
Every time I lead a Dreaming Room® this question comes up. It’s usually asked by someone who has difficulty making up his or her mind. Who is so overwhelmed by the flood of thoughts that run through the mind as to be completely incapacitated by the sheer weight of them? At least that’s how it feels when you’re inside that person, as we all are from time to time. I call it the Reluctant Entrepreneur. I talk about that syndrome a lot in my latest book, E-Myth Mastery: The Seven Essential Disciplines for Building a World Class Business.

The Art of Projections in a Dotcom 2.0 World
The world is running amok with entrepreneurs pitching every sort of Web 2.0, social networking, user-generated-content startup. It’s the attack of the bull-shiitake startup projections, so I’m losing my hearing; there’s a ringing in my head, and I get dizzy every once in a while. Before the world implodes (again), here is a top-tenish list of ways to create realistic projections in this Dotcom 2.0 world.

The Tale of the Toothache
"Think, then act" is the Mantra of "the strategy boys." I've long been an "act, then think" guy.

What Does It Take to Scale A Web 2.0 Startup?
Last year, the meme of “you can start a company for minimal capital” made the rounds. This is still true. But – it’s not trivial to scale a company for minimal capital (it’s possible, but an exception, not the norm.) This meme is starting to make the rounds – Heather Green at BusinessWeek just wrote an article titled Make-or-Break Time For The Net Newbies.

How to Stay Innovative?
Sara Blakely, a local Atlantan, started the company Spanx out of her apartment. After several failed attempts to find the right undergarment to hide imperfections and panty lines when wearing white pants with open-toed shoes, she decided to cut the feet off her pantyhose. This worked beautifully! So, she wondered, why doesn't this already exist?

Your Revenue Forecast Is Wrong
I received several questions in response to my post titled The Purpose of Numbers on a Y Axis and my followup post titled The Lack of Numbers of Y Axis Doesn’t Disqualify You. One of the questions prompted a rant in my brain that often spills out of my mouth when I’m on the receiving end of an early stage pitch.

Lesson #2: “So what if it’s just fun?”
“We were working at Odeo, but we weren’t as passionate about the podcasting service as we should have been,” recalls Stone. “We weren’t using it, and that was a problem. Twitter got started because Ev gave us some freedom to think along different lines.”

Lesson #1: “Creativity comes from constraint”
When asked whether they had anticipated just how big Twitter would be when they first launched it, Stone replied, “Yeah, we knew Barack Obama was going to use it.” Williams followed with, “I knew I was going to be on Oprah in two years.”

The SMS to Success: Texting Takes Twitter To New Heights

Building Longterm Viability into Your Prototype
Software prototypes are supposed to model how to implement a solution. But today's business world forces many prototypes (and all their short cuts) to be used in production environments. This article describes a number of characteristics that ensures a prototype can incrementally and effectively grow into the sophisticated product that lets you go to market on a wide scale.

Enterprise Readiness Keeps Success within Your Sights
Whether you are starting a new technology company or launching a new product, you typically have less than two years before you have to be profitable. For most, that means they have to be able to sell their products to large enterprise customers. Once the clock is ticking, many crack under the pressure. But those who embrace enterprise readiness are beating the clock and their competition.

Backpack business idea prompted by frustration
After years of travel with bags that were miserable, non-functioning, or unattractive in a business setting, Myrna Marofsky and Karen Stinson decided to design one that worked for them and for other women business travelers. They are the founders of WiseWomen, an e-commerce business selling the WisePack™, a perfect travel backpack purse for women. The bag was designed for women by women and has many features that make it both fashionable and functional. Read about how they started up the business and overcame obstacles along the way.

What Does it Really Mean "Work on Your Business?"
How often have you heard people say "Work on your business, not just in your business?" Do you know what this means, why it's important, and are you doing it? If you're like most people, there's a good chance you are working on your business. But perhaps you are like I was, having only a general, but vague, understanding about what it means. I've heard people talk about it so much lately that I decided to pull out my copy of The E Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber and review the chapter on this topic. I'm glad I did. Reading it 2 years later I see things a lot differently.

Book Review: Waiting For Your Cat To Bark?
The subtitle of this book (”Persuading Customers When They Ignore Marketing”) gives a hint about its purpose: how to appeal to your prospective customers. While the book can be enjoyed by any small business owner, the information is a bit more sophisticated than the usual “here’s some simple ways to improve your business’ marketing”.

Do-it-Yourself Patents
As an entrepreneur, you're always looking to save time and money. This article discusses some of the pros and cons of applying for a patent yourself using the latest books and software out there.

Are Multiple Supply Chains Important (Survey Response 4)
A 2006 Report made the following statement: "Designing and operating multiple supply networks to meet the needs of specific market segments--supply chain innovation and the use of multiple supply chains will be important to future revenue and market share growth." Based on your own experience is this an accurate assessment? If yes, why? If no, why?

How to Get Your Consumer Invention to Market.
You have an idea for a great invention, so what do you do now? Joan Lefkowitz, agent for the most successful hair accessory invention in history, the TopsyTail, offers a step-by-step “informed approach” on how to turn your consumer invention into a bonanza of extra income.

The Reluctant Consultant
The letters, emails, faxes start like this: “Dear Ms, Mrs, Sir (I love that one!), Miss Lefkowitz: I need advice, and I know only you can help me. I have a great idea for a fashion accessory (or whatever) invention. I know it’s good because I told my family and friends, and they think it’s great too. I know this product could make a lot of money. The only problem is I don’t know what to do now, or, I don’t have any money, or, I want someone to take my idea and do whatever it takes to get it out to the public. Can you help me?” Does this sound familiar?
