The Courageous Captain: Turner Takes Television By Storm

Wary of the increasing popularity of television and radio, Turner decided to purchase the struggling Atlanta-based television station WJRJ in 1969. He renamed Turner Advertising to Turner Communications Group and began plans for realizing his grander vision. Just six months later, Turner purchased WRET, a similarly weak station based in North Carolina and in four years managed to make a profit of $1 million. Turner had bought the rights to classic black and white films, and by airing these he was able to increase his number of viewers dramatically. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had also changed their rules to allow cable providers to import signals from far-away stations, which Turner would soon begin to take advantage of.

Walking the Talk: Tony Robbins Becomes a Success

Neuro-Linguistic Programming promised instant results; by directly altering unconscious ‘programs’, Robbins and other proponents of NLP believed that it was one of the most promising new therapeutic techniques. Robbins created a new seminar based on NLP and hit the road with it. He began appearing on television and radio stations throughout first, Canada, and then the U.S. In 1989, he launched a series of infomercials to promote his product, which proved to be a very successful strategy. Since their initial introduction, Robbins’ infomercials have aired on average every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day, somewhere in North America.

Local versus National Coverage

When planning for your Press Release, you decide who would be the most interested in hearing your story as well as where your audience is located. If you are releasing information about a local public event, it would seem obvious that you would want to notify the public through local newspapers, newsletters, radio and television. You would also want to make sure the Press Release includes the actual dates you want the release published. If it is not published in a timely manner, it might be too late.

Press Release Key Components: Who, What, When, Where and Why

Most journalists have been taught that they must be able to answer the five Ws before they have a credible piece of journalism. The five Ws are Who, What, When, Where and Why. It seems so simple, doesn’t it? Yet newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations receive many Press Releases that are not newsworthy because the Press Release author didn’t, couldn’t or wouldn’t use the five Ws. By answering these five, one word questions when writing your Press Release, you can be assured that your Press Release is newsworthy and written from a journalist perspective.

Publicity is Priceless!

How do newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations get their news? How can they possibly know about Silicon Valley’s latest product; the promotion of Bob Smith at the Acme Company; the results of experiments conducted at Rutgers; a new book published by an unknown author or the date of the local Rotary Club’s pancake breakfast? Obviously, they don’t have reporters everywhere, all of the time. They rely on individuals, companies or the government to send them a Press Release.

You have decided which audience you want to target and determined that your release is going to newspapers, magazines, internet wire services, and television and radio stations. You decided to pay the Acme Marketing firm to professionally write your press release. As a part of their writing the press release, they will also do the distribution for you. This saves you time and money. But how will you know if the release was picked up by any of the media outlets on your distribution? |

Who owns the new telephone at your TV Station?

Not long ago the only interaction viewers had with TV was stations was writing a letter, sending an email or calling them on the phone. It was all very personal and private and the viewer had to really want to communicate with the station. It was an effort. Now if viewers want to communicate with stations they can through a new pipeline called Social Media which is no less important than the telephone, email or the almost extinct letter. In fact, one could argue it is more important because it is immediately relevant, urgent and very public.

TV Stations –9 Basic Social Media Suggestions

One thing certainly has changed this past year. I am no longer asked by TV Stations if they need to be in the social media space! Now I get asked, "How do we do it and Facebook or twitter?" The good news is TV Stations have realized the train left the station. If TV stations are to remain relevant they need to reach out to their viewers and establish an entirely new relationship with them. It is no longer a one-way street of "push and pray" content providing. So what's a station to do with limited resources and, for many, lack of understanding? Here are a few very basic suggestions:
