The Number 1 Question Can A Consultant Really Make a Difference
| |
| Over the past few weeks I have received a spate of questions asking (although some readers have already formed an opinion), what role does an outside consultant really play in an organization? Specifically, what do they do and how can they help me?
This is one of those rare instances when I wear the hats of an unbiased and neutral writer as well as a consultant (I write and teach accredited courses for associations such as Purchasing Management Association of Canada or PMAC).
While I cannot speak for others, over the next few paragraphs I will attempt to provide you with some additional insight into how I approach my work. Hopefully this will at least begin to paint a clearer pricture and perhaps establish a framework for evaluating your current consulting arrangements to enable you to get more from existing relationships. |

The Value of the Certification Process A PI Q and A
| |
| The following is an interesting question that was submitted by an eSourcing and SCM Professional regarding the relevancy of the certification programs offered through a number of associations.
Reader Question:
In SCM, what is the relevance of certifications like APICS-CSCP?
Raheel Ahmad

India
My Response:
I actually just returned from a speaking engagement at the APICS Houston 6 Packed conference.
While I both write and teach accredited courses for organizations such as the Purchasing Management Association of Canada (PMAC), this was my first event with APICS.

“Crisis Management Planning – What’s Happening Where We Work?”
| |
| Crises continue to be in our newspaper headlines and the lead stories on radio and television broadcasts. And crises continue to affect businesses in many forms and continue to occur without notice. But what’s happening where we work in response to this continuing trend of crises? Are businesses preparing for crises by developing crisis management plans? Do you know if your company has a crisis management plan or a business disaster recovery plan? Do they have a crisis communication plan?
The American Management Association did a survey in August & September 2005 and what that survey revealed is summarized below.

Purchasing Management ---- The Driving Force to Maximizing Success during Tough Economic Times
| |
| Purchasing managers, purchasing agents and buyers are the life support system of your supply chain. This has become much more apparent during these tough economic times. I often use the phrase in leadership training; "You're only as good as the people you surround yourself with." That phrase also applies to one of the most critical functions in distribution, the Purchasing Manager. So what does being the life support systems to supply chain management mean? It means purchasing is the center of the universe, the equator, the fulcrum when it comes to meeting customer demands. This is a common fact. We all know it. Most of us say it and yet few of us really understand it. |

Silo Busting
| |
| In the old days we had sales guys and we had marketing guys and we had purchasing guys. The sales and marketing guys hated the purchasing guys. They never bought enough stuff, right? The wagon was never full.
A common quote coming from some sales people:
.
"Our purchasing department sucks; I know there is an extra 5% discount out there. Purchasing is forcing me to sell at these high prices; we are just not buying right."
The purchasing guys, in the mean time were saying;
"Our sales guys are goofy. They keep saying they can't sell from an empty wagon. They want the wagon so full the wheels will come off. They say-"Put this in and I will sell it" and they never sell it.
These kinds of feelings, these quotes were like a tradition. It describes a natural silo between sales and purchasing. It's not really supposed to be funny. |
