Lesson #3: Everybody Deserves The Opportunity To Succeed
“I just wanted to make a million dollars,” says Gardner. “But I couldn't sing and I couldn't play ball, so I said to my mother, ‘How am I going to make a million dollars?’ And she said to me, ‘Son, if you believe you can do it, you will.’” He couldn’t sing, he couldn’t play ball; he was also homeless and he was black – Gardner definitely had the odds stacked against him. However, he took his mother’s lesson to heart and was determined to succeed regardless.

The Secret of Happiness
Happiness has become a hot scientific topic over the last two decades. Recently the BBC presented a six part series called The Happiness Formula. This series covered topics such as: 1. Think yourself happy 2. The politics of happiness 3. The power of happiness 4. The happiness recipe The scientific tests supporting the series suffered, to some extent, because happiness relies upon the subjective self assessment by an individual of their own happiness rather than an objective measure. However, that suggests that happiness is something that can be objectively measured and that may not be so. Perhaps each of us have our own definition of happiness that are all equally valid.

I have discovered that the topic of "happiness" is one of those taboo subjects that people don't want to talk about or get uncomfortable around. Which really is unfortunate because that same discussion could lead to some new information that could shift everything. Happiness, like anything else worth having, needs to be evaluated, needs to be worked on, needs new information and tools to pave the way for a greater level of happiness and requires our attention and commitment. Happiness is something to get excited about, not something to be feared or resisted. And happiness is available to everyone regardless of any current or existing circumstances. Now that's exciting. What Is The Pursuit Of Happiness?
As a new President is inaugurated in the U.S., I've seen and heard a lot of discussions regarding our forefathers. One concept that struck me is the idea of the "pursuit of happiness" which is spelled out in the Declaration of Independence. Did you notice, they left out the path for that pursuit? I mean, the next line in the Declaration of Independence doesn't say, "and this is how Happiness should be pursued."
