Problems First
Defining success in the work place depends on realistic goal setting and quality control.

Lesson #2: Don’t Dream About Being Good, Dream About Being the Best!
When he was a young boy, struggling with the loss of his father and the difficulties of life in an orphanage, Monaghan spent his time reading biographies of great men who had come before him. Abraham Lincoln, a poor farm boy from Illinois, had used hard work and determination to become the President of the United States. Why couldn’t he do the same, Monaghan wondered? Or in reading Sears catalogues, Monaghan would dream about what it would be like to have a life where he could actually afford everything within its glorious pages.

Lesson #1: Good Taste Means Good Business
“If a man goes into business with only the idea of making a lot of money, chances are he won't,” Hall wrote in his autobiography, When You Care Enough. “But if he puts service and quality first, the money will take care of itself. Producing a first-class product that is a real need is a much stronger motivation for success than getting rich."

Writing Skills Atrophy Among Copycats, And Do-It-Yourself Business Communication Marketing
One of the best business communication marketing moves I ever made was sending out a monthly newsletter to current and prospective clients. I say that because it's a natural form of self-promotion minus obnoxious hype. You get your name out there -- with a lot of the keywords that attract search engines -- and you give readers an inkling of what you can do for them. Its value lies in an almost nonexistent "nag quotient." Far too often, I get insistent, "look at me!," "have I got an introductory offer for you!" emails from search engine optimization firms, online degree factories, "experts" in attracting government contracts, weight loss specialists, you name it. Not a one adds an iota to my knowledge of what they offer. Hype is what it is. But a newsletter that gives practical advice is truly effective business communication.

Communication Skills And Effective Writing Must Include Meticulous Self-Editing
No matter how clever and succinct you may be at business writing and effective communication in general, you risk blowing it if you don't edit yourself. By edit, I mean proofreading for grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc., as well as revising or rewriting. You can do the latter as you go, or you can let your words flow, then give it several careful reads before hitting the "send" button or printing it out and offering it to your client, customer, boss, vendor, coworkers, etc. Why? Because that's you doing the business communications in the email or report. As such, assuming you care about your image or reputation, your writing skills should appear both professional and natural. Or, to put it more tellingly in the words of the great novelist Toni Morrison: "The language must be careful and appear effortless. It must not sweat."

Business Writing Skills, Media Training, Presentation Skills Training (Not PowerPoint) Count On Quality Control
• No matter how clever a writer you may be, failure to edit yourself carefully can harm your business communication and waste your improving writing skills. • The key to media training is building an effective communication bridge to the press. Accomplish that and you're on the way to marketing-oriented business communication that works. • Presentation skills training that succeeds stresses eye-to-eye effective communication and shuns PowerPoint.

Writing Training, Business Communication Training, Presentation Skills Training And Instruction in Effective Communication
Writing or speaking in public, effective communication begins and ends with the "what" -- the content. Once writing training and presentation skills training help you gain confidence in that (and you will because you're an expert; otherwise, why would you be writing or speaking in the first place?), the "how" will begin to fall into place. To get there, you should take advantage of the fact that WRITING IS THINKING, learn to FOCUS ON YOUR READER OR AUDIENCE and EDIT YOURSELF SCRUPULOUSLY (quality control). Also, no matter how casually you may approach emails, that form of business communication is ubiquitous and requires the same writing skills as hard-copy memos or reports or letters. So the same three foundations of effective communication should apply when you start tapping away at the keyboard.

Calculating How To Charge
This is how my friend Rick Schilling does when he tells people how much he will charge for his service.

Entering the ‘go-go’ zone with your eyes wide open
The Go-Go zone is that place a business can find themselves in that sounds like heaven. In reality, it is more often hell. It is the place where you have more business than you know what to do with, where it is all you can muster just to get orders processed and shipped. Keeping customers happy gets left by the wayside. This article is my effort to help you understand the pitfalls of this seemingly idyllic situation, and help you prepare for it if and when it occurs.

Free Yourself From Drudgery And Add £000's To Your Profits At The Same Time!
Like most people that go into business on their own, your number 1 priority is the product/service that you established their business to sell/provide. In the early stages of business all your energy is taken getting the business up and running and the records, apart from sales bits, will probably take a very back seat for a long time. The fact is that running a business in the early days involves so many hats for you to wear. You have to be the sales director, buyer, production department and quality control. You also have to become a receptionist, office clerk, helpdesk manager, operation manager, filing clerk, photocopy expert, letter writer, envelope stuffer and stamp licker. It is no surprise to anyone that the day to day bookkeeping gets overlooked!

My Biggest Obstacles
Meeting the Carvers was not by definition an ‘obstacle’, but it was something of a culture shock. It was my first visit to Africa. The Carver groups made me feel very welcome, it was a great experience and I have been back to Tabaka many times.

Effective Writing: Where Have You Gone?
There are several poorly written articles circling the bowl on a daily basis, and this may end up being yet another one, but it's alarming to me that professional journalists consistently botch spelling and grammar. It used to be newspapers, magazines, and books served as an example of the proper use of punctuation, word groupings, grammar, and synonyms. Not anymore.

Just Because You Are Impatient Does NOT Mean I Have To Move Any Faster
Have we evolved into beings that have become so selfish and self absorbed that we have forgotten about our own self control? The ability to keep your mental, emotional and physical being, in check, requires self-control. The inability to do so is a sign that you are "out of control." When you easily lose your self control, you will most certainly fire off outbursts of anger, temper and blame on others.

What You Control
You may not be able to control if your job gets cut, but you can control whether you're a high performer who your boss is fighting to keep. You may not be able to control how quickly you get another job, but you can control the number of daily contacts you make in your search and how you "show up," future-focused, at the interview. You may not be able to control the amount of work you get, but you do control whether you're responding as a victim or taking action toward developing your skills and contacts for a new future.

Survive or Thrive: It’s Your Choice
The U.S. economy is experiencing a rough patch right now, and organizations in all sectors are faced with the challenges. While the media focus on stories about how people & organizations are suffering financially & otherwise, everything is not doom and gloom. There are businesses that are doing just fine, and opportunities abound for those who seek them. Whichever scenario fits your situation, my contention is that you have the ability to optimize your quality of life, and that of your organization, by choosing how you view your circumstances. Though there are things we are unable to control, we can control how we perceive our respective situations. How we view ourselves and the world around us leads us to take actions that shape the quality of our lives. That perception is a choice each of us is free to make at any time.

Are you following a Sales Process?
If not, you are not only wasting your time, but you are also losing sales because of it. You think you are in control but in reality you are out of control. Have you ever been rejected? If your answer is yes, you have just proven that you are not in control of the sales process; however, the buyer is in control. Isn’t it your job and responsibility as a sales professional to qualify the prospects and to reject them if they are not qualified? Who is really qualifying? Who is really in control?

Key Ways to Convey Quality
Let’s say that what differentiates your product or service from the competition’s is quality. It may seem like advertising “quality” would be a breeze, right? Unfortunately, it’s not. Customers hear the word “quality” all the time –often from companies selling low-quality products. In this sense, quality is like trust. If a salesperson resorts to “You can trust me,” it’s often an indicator to beware. Accordingly, if a company is too direct in how it advertises “quality,” customers may ignore the claim or be suspicious of it. So how can you prove that your product or service is the real deal? Following are some often-overlooked ways to convey quality.

Problems First
Defining success in the work place depends on realistic goal setting and quality control.

SEO Quality Vs SEO Quantity
We all know it; we've always known it and we'll tell our own clients and anyone who'll listen until we're blue in the interface. It's ALL about quality not quantity. Quality outs. Quality ins. It's the quality of your link neighbourhood that matters not the volume of inbound links that carries most weight in Google's take on relevance and, ultimately, your search placement.

The Secret to Feeling in Control During Times of Change
For most of us, the thought of having control over life inconveniences seems like a great idea; wouldn’t it be great to control traffic, the weather, our family or neighbors? However, rather than actual control over our environment, what we really want is simply a sense of control, to feel like we’re on top of things. This can be achieved by choosing to accept challenges for what they are, setting a clear intention of what we need to do and finding the balance between our level of ability and the challenge presented. By learning to consciously reframe even the most chaotic situation, you’ll find that feeling “in control” is less about making life go according to plan, and more about your ability to focus on what you can control.

Assessing Our Ability to Influence Others
In our personal and leadership development workshops we often conduct a 'degrees of control' exercise. We ask participants to come up with examples in the following areas: 1. Direct Control; 2. Influence; and 3. No Control. While there's often lots of debate and not always full agreement, examples under No Control generally include things like the weather, the economy, natural disasters, freak accidents, and the like. Discussions about my degree of Direct Control usually boil down to just one thing - me. However, some autocratic people fool themselves into thinking they have direct control over their teams, kids, or people reporting to them. Many other people are quick to surrender to the Victimitis Virus and declare they have no control or even influence over the behavior of anyone else.

The World Doesn't Need Another Bad Book
The traditional publishing model has its drawbacks, but it has one benefit as well: A built-in quality control process. You can argue about the quality of some of the books that have published, but there's no denying that a publisher adds several extra layers - such as market testing, editing, proofreading and layout - that generally improve the final product. But that's no longer the case. The good news is that now anybody can publish a book. The bad news is that now anybody can publish a book!
