| Many Australian state governments have expanded their concept of consumer protection to include small business consumers who were bargaining on a far from level playing field, where owners of large shopping centres had all the advantages and all the power . They seek to provide this protection by making sure that prospective tenants have sufficient information to make a sound business decision when entering into or renewing a lease.
Recent amendments clearly offer further protection to tenants, the Government regarding them as the less powerful party in most retail leasing transactions. As a result, the amendments require greater responsibility and pro-active behaviour from the Landlord.

| Over Easter there was a large fire at Coorparoo in Queensland, where a number of small businesses were burnt out. This is a devastating event for any business, but what made it more so was that a number of the small businesses were not insured.
What was the effect? Let me tell you about one small business and the effect this has had on them. This small business was a service business; they were starting to get a brilliant reputation in the industry and had a number of major contracts on the go. They had employed a number of staff to work in the business and things were looking rosy. Insurance was on their to do list, but as things got busier and busier it never seemed to make it to the top of the list. As their information was critical to their business, they regularly backed up all of their computers.

| We have no better example of how, in times of crisis, people pull together than in our own backyard. Look at the impact the storms and Cyclone Yarsi has had on Queensland. One of the biggest challenges facing any group of people is how to cope with a huge upheaval or change in their lives. In the face of fear and insecurity people come together and work as a team to get through. It is so uplifting to see the unselfishness of others who have left their immediate problems behind to offer help to those less fortunate. This same spirit should be used when facing major change at work. |

What is common to all these is that whoever gets the top job in any of them will then be referred to as a “leader”. What is also common to all of them is that whoever holds the top job now is also referred to as “a leader” but one who, according to pretenders to the throne, is seriously flawed. It begs the question “How can we recognize successful leaders?” |
