| Randy knew Joe from track & field. He told a story of one track meet. Joe arrived late. As a member of ROTC and the reserves he had parachuted twice that morning and then rushed to the track meet. Once arriving at Pacific Lutheran University in nearby Parkland, he took part in the one hundred yard dash, the 220, anchored the 440, and did everything but give out towels. He took first place in each of seven events. How many people would have just stopped at jumping out of the airplane? |

| When Fields opened up her very first store, she was excited. She had finally created a solid business plan and found a banker that believed in her. On the store’s first day of business, Fields’ husband questioned her about her long-term financial objectives, but Fields was so excited to finally be in business, she dismissed him. “Oh my gosh, Randy,” she told him. “You know, I’ve got an annual goal. I’ve got monthly plans. But today I just want to get started. I just want to open up the store.” |

Successful People are Optimists -- They Ask For, and Often Get What They Want

| Self confident, optimistic people ask for what they want. They may not always get it, but often they do. If you want to become a career success, you need to be confident enough to ask for what you want. Randy Pausch and his father and son got to ride in the nose cone of the Disney World Monorail -- because he chose optimism and asked. Cathy and I got to see the sold out Inspiring Impressionism exhibit at the Denver Art Museum -- because she chose optimism and asked. Ask for what you want. You'll be surprised at how many times you'll get what you want. |
