Lesson #3: Your Work Ethic Is Your Most Important Asset
“I'm not too good at lying still in the sun,” says McMahon. “I have to do something with my mind, or I'll get in trouble.” By all accounts, McMahon was obsessed with wrestling since he was a little boy, and he continues to be just as devoted a fan today. It is his passion for his work that allows him to maintain the strong work ethic that he has, working long after his competitors have already gone to sleep.

Offline is the New Online is the New Offline
Funny how these things go. For a while we all happy with disconnected apps, tools like Word, Powerpoint, Access, and Excel that were PC-only software. And then it was cool to discover online apps that could do many of the same things, or at least useful variants, like Gmail, Writely, etc.

Instant Intimacy
Whether your goal is to sell more widgets or make more friends, you'll be more successful the quicker you can connect with people. And of course, the more intimate the connection, the better. So let's discuss how you can capitalize on the many brief interactions at your next conference or social gathering.

A Mental Model For VC Investments
A reader asked me the other day if – in the words of Charlie Munger – I have a “mental model” for investing in early stage companies. I do, but I’d rather give examples of the two best approaches I’ve heard of from other people.

Filling the Gap Between Generation and Conversion
I had a journalist ask me the other day to define the difference between sales and marketing for the typical entrepreneur.

Forget the Planner - Get a Plan!
When was the last time you took a vacation—not just a weeklong getaway to a luxury resort on some remote island, but actual time off from your job to do whatever you like? If it’s been longer than you can remember, you’re not alone.

Experience vs. Education
I talk a lot about education because I think a good college education can really take you far in life. At the same time, however, some people are incredibly book smart but are clueless when they deal with the real world. Others are street smart but can’t handle anything other than what they’re accustomed to.

Paying Kids to Study (An Early Business Lesson)

Wrong. 30 Times Over.
While on holiday in New Zealand ... I got to thinking. As time goes by, "one" (me) tends to complexify one's approach to almost everything. The innocence (and clarity) of "days gone by" is blurred. I know that I am "guilty as charged." (By me.) And I think most of the other "gurus" (horrid term, but it's become part of the biz language) have also gotten away from reality. Hence, I began taking notes for a book-like "thing" that is not, in fact, a book. I titled it:

The Coach as Personal Trainer: Re-Grooving Critical Behavior in Real Time
Knowing what to do and doing it as automatic behavior are two very different things. We can watch a video, read a book, and attend a seminar which can impart significantly useful information and perspectives. Much that is required of the new leadership style, however, is not about what we know, but about how we personally operate when the heat’s on. And we often need professional help in real time to install new behaviors, and to get and keep us at the enhanced levels we want to function.

My Kinda Guy!
Several Sunday papers reviewed Neil Sheehan's A Fiery Peace in a Cold War: Bernard Schriever and the Ultimate Weapon. It's a "one guy against the world" story of the first order.

“Do Something” - An original Approach to Managing Change
There are lots of change management models out there (McKinsey’s 7 S model, Kotter’s Eight Step Model, to name but two). A change model put forward way back in 1947 by Kurt Lewin called Action Research (AR) often gets overlooked. While many current models put the emphasis on planning and analysis, Lewin emphasizes taking action and then learning from the results. Learning from experience (always a good thing!) is what AR is all about. In AR you pretty much dive right in with an intervention in a real world system with the aim of improving things then you closely scrutinize the effects of your actions.

To be or not to be, that is the question
Have you ever heard about Affirmations? Athletes call them visualizations, Priests call them prayers and Buddhist monks call them meditation on a topic. So, what am I saying here exactly, what has praying got to do with affirmations and visualizations? Focused meditation, praying, visualizations, affirmations are according to my experience all part of the same concept. They are all a part of getting ready to become what you want to be or get ready to achieve what you want to achieve. However, if you don't get the energy and inspiration to get out of your couch in front of the TV and go out into the real world to MAKE IT HAPPEN - you are just wasting your time.

How Long Do You Need To Keep Your Business Records?
This question comes up a lot here at the office. I am asked at least 3 times a week as there seems to be lots of confusion out there in the “real world” amongst business people. The answer is it depends… If you just complete a Self Assessment Return each year as a consequence of having a company car or other employment benefits, then you should keep your paperwork relating to your claims and expenses for...

The Customer Satisfaction Trap
Most companies that use satisfaction surveys to learn how happy their customers are with their products and services often mislead themselves. What matters is not what customers say about the level of satisfaction, but whether they feel the value they received will keep them loyal. Loyalty or repurchase behaviour is the only true measure of customer satisfaction. As tools for measuring the value a company delivers to it’s customers, satisfaction surveys are not very useful because, amongst other reasons, they focus primarily on transactional issues, such as product quality, deliveries, technical knowledge, hygiene factors, product specs etc. These items are simply the minimum requirements for entry into the market.

7 Quick n Easy Steps to Create Videos That Impress
We’re adding a lot of video to our websites now. We all know (based on what every guru I’ve studied says), that videos can sometimes dramatically boost conversion rates on sales copy, websites and/or landing pages. Carlos Garcia, for example, created a report that showed how adding a video to one of his websites and changing a couple of things boosted sales rates from 1.6 to 3.3 –that’s almost doubling the initial sales rates. I’ve had to write numerous video scripts lately for different websites, and because at MindValley we like processes and automation, I came up with a process for writing these scripts. It integrates a lot of ideas from Robert Cialdini, from Frank Kern, from Kenneth Yu, and from Jeff Walker.

Similarity Hueristics, Iterative Methodologies and the Emergence of the Modern Supply Chain
Some professions, such as software developers, regularly utilize the similarity heuristic. For software developers, the similarity heuristic is utilized when performing debugging tasks. A software bug exhibits a set of symptoms indicating the existence of a problem. In general, similar symptoms are caused by similar types of programming errors. By comparing these symptoms with those of previously corrected software flaws, a developer is able to determine the most probable cause and take an effective course of action. Over time, a developer’s past experiences will allow their use of the similarity heuristic to be highly effective, quickly choosing the debugging approach that will likely reveal the problem’s source. 6. Penetration Selling -- Penetrating the Barriers to Commitment
The fifth and final step of the Penetration Selling process is “Closing”. Closing is defined as getting a firm commitment from the prospect to acquire the product or service which is being offered. The key barriers that need to be penetrated in order for the close to be successful are often referred to, among sales-trainers, as “Objections”. This is a catch-all term which includes any and every thought a prospect might present, or action he might take, that acts to block the completion of the sale. In the Penetration Selling system, we discover that all variations of customer concerns and objections fall into only two categories, and the handling for both categories is very similar. The two categories are...

Comprehending Our Frames of Perception
Most of the time, I think that I'm seeing the 'big picture' when I'm trying to make sense out of what I perceive. Yet, that's never the case. I'm always seeing things from just one limited viewpoint. That's my 'frame' from which I gather my knowledge and experience and on which I impose my interpretation. It's only when I realize how narrow that frame is that I can become ready to let in other perspectives and consider other alternatives.

Wisdom Is Knowing What We Don't Know
Comprehension, as most people understand it, is not a strength but rather a weakness. People often presuppose wrongly that everyone has the same comprehension as they do. Arrogance insists that our vision of the "facts" is the right one. Humility demands that we be aware of how much of our own personal interpretation goes into our vision of reality. We begin to have real comprehension once we realize that our perspective may not be the only valid one.

Sometimes Motivation Has to be Felt
Motivation is a funny thing. You can try to encourage people by telling them the benefits of this, that or the other, but sometimes it's just not enough. You've got to make them "feel" it. If you craft your message right, you can do just that using words only.

How to Identify The Real Leaders Out There Among Us
How can you know a real leader when you see one? What do real leaders do that define them as leaders? Many people may consider themselves leaders, but in reality do not demonstrate principles of leadership and are not leaders at all. In today’s world there are many imposters posing as leaders. In order to assist you in identifying leaders in your company or organization, I have selected seven (7) actions that I believe real leaders take that define them as “real leaders.” Those seven (7) actions are:

Crisis - What Crisis?
In an ideal world, we would never have crises. Yet in the real world we do. Managing crisis is quite a challenge, so here are some thoughts on how to make it work best for you.

Lesson #4: Push Your Limits
Until 1993, the lion’s share of Spielberg’s work was confined to the world of make-believe. He dealt with sharks and aliens but had yet to conquer the difficult genre of serious real-world drama. He wasn’t sure what the results would be, and many doubted his potential to crossover, but he was determined to try nonetheless.

Human Resources Jobs
Human resources jobs are like the pearl in an oyster – they are not extremely visible to the outside world, but without them, few companies would be what they are today. Indeed, they are often a secret weapon of the corporate world. Though they don’t directly make any money for the company, you can be sure that they are helping to build up its overall revenues. If you think one of these positions is for you, then read on to discover what they mean out in the real world.

Credibility Starts With Your Name
Establishing credibility online, especially if you wish to operate as an internet marketer, has some similarities with the real world. The first thing to think about when launching yourself onto the online world would be your online name. Seems an easy enough concept.

Sales Assessment Completion Times May Impact the Validity of the Assessments

Renegade Leadership: Being a Trailblazer
Do you ever get the feeling that perhaps you weren't made for the rules of the "real world?" You have your own ideas about how things need to be done, and you know that people would just listen to you that you could set the world afire. You sometimes get accused of being rebellious or not being a team player or of being "idealistic." If any of these sound familiar to you, then you'll be comforted to know that there's nothing wrong with you.

Your Phone Could Be the Key to Making AR Real
Augmented Reality is simply the real world we live in only more. It's there naturally when you watch a sporting event. You call it up when you use your smartphone to get a recommendation or learn more about the place you're going to visit. True it's not real real but it is a lot more helpful, more useful than existing in a virtual world. Every day more AR work is being done to help you make the right decisions. It's reality but with a little...augmentation.

Everybody Needs a Mentor
What this is all leading to is the blatant reality that the world of real estate investment has become a complex and varied proposition. You want to venture into real estate investing? Fine…but you need a mentor. And chances are that your parents, no matter how well meaning, are/were not qualified to give you what you’re going to need as you explore the ominous world of 21st century investment.

Real leadership is the only solution to any leadership crisis
There is a lack of real leadership everywhere. Politicians are in general the worst examples of leadership. Real leaders build bridges between opposing forces so that both work together for the good of all. Real leaders are authentic, transparent and trustworthy. We are compelled to follow real leaders because they tell a compelling, believable story that rings true in our hearts and minds. Real leaders are the Kings and Queens of both/and. Like never before we must stand against the tyranny of either/or and be the difference we want to see in the world. Be a real leader, please. We need to move on from the frauds who claim to lead us and build the bridges to our new world.
