On February 20th, I returned from St. Augustine, Florida, where I attended the 7th Annual Meeting of The First Tee (www.thefirsttee.org) and was a featured speaker on Strategic Thinking and Planning. It became clear from the reception and comments I received after my power point presentation, that I had accomplished my goal of sensitizing the attendees to the benefits of strategic thinking and planning and getting many of them to commit to starting the strategic planning process soon after they returned home. I selected a few slides from my powerpoint and have listed the information below that I shared with them.

Why are you in business? This question is answered by the numerous vision statements hanging on reception areas through the country. Unfortunately, the power of this simple statement is ignored and may help to keep companies from their goals. Maybe this short story will quickly demonstrate the value of a well crafted vision statement.
THE VALUE OF A PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT
I am sure that all of you who work in a corporate environment are familiar with your corporate mission statement? It is the one that typically hangs in the front reception area or perhaps on the wall in the boardroom. But do you have a personal mission statement and/or understand in a meaningful way what your purpose for living actually is?

Productivity and Attitude
I'm the only one who does anything around here! Several years ago I was on a late-night television show in New York City. For some strange reason, they wanted me in the studio that afternoon at 4:30. I walked in and was stunned by the small size of the reception area. It contained a couch for three, a chair for one and a sink, refrigerator and coffee maker.

Find marketing partners
A marketing partner is another business which can complement your business or help to refer new customers your way in exchange for reciprocal referrals. A good example of this is if you leave some of your leaflets in the sales area of a fellow business, preferable in the same town or area as your business and in exchange you have their leaflets in your reception area. To take this concept a little further you could introduce promotional schemes; for example...you could put on your sales literature "When you buy a pizza you get 20% discount off of XYZ video store". At the same time as you offering this you can get XYZ video store to offer a similar promotion so that when a customer rents a video they will get 20% off pizzas at ABC pizza store.
Microsoft Ditches Bing Cashback
Due to poor reception, Microsoft is getting rid of Bing Cashback, a publicity stunt meant to encourage web users to use Bing search engine by giving them rebates on products searched through it.
