The Sky is Falling-Run and Hide?
Ever since the financial sector crisis in America began, there's been a cloud of pessimism and fear reaching over the land. Here in Canada, I listen to business people talk about recession. Businesses big and small are cutting back on expenses, laying-off staff. The talk is even gloomier in the States. Many younger business people seem completely thrown off balance, while those of us a little older, look to be hunkering down to wait out the coming storm. What a great opportunity.

On the Lighter Side
What a tough year. I am sure most of you are glad it is over. The recession has had an impact on every one of us. But, now is the time to look back and be grateful; grateful for who you are and who you want to become. December, unlike years of the past was very busy for me. This is only because in prior years I always took the month of December off. This year due to the tough economy that just didn't seem like a good option. So, I spent time in Cleveland, Dallas, Tampa and Montreal. I froze in Cleveland & Montreal, didn't take a coat to Dallas and should have and I went to Tampa during Florida's coldest temperatures in years. Over the holidays Tracy and I visited friends in South Carolina and got to see a calf born on a cattle ranch and took our dog to the ocean. (It was way to cold to even consider swimming.)

Does Recession Hinder Churches?
When people are hurting financially, spiritually, grieving a loss, and going through other hard times, they will often turn to the church for guidance even if they are not church-goers. Most churches have benevolence committees and funds used to help the needy year round but from Thanksgiving on through the holidays, more requests come in for help than any other time of year. With the recession, churches are being hard hit for assistance. Some churches have food pantries, clothes closets; some can help with power bills, pay for medicine and other ways in which the needy require and request help. When church members are hurting from similar experiences, their church families will surround them with love and whatever assistance they might need. My church in the past has paid my heating bill because I got laid off and needed help.

Jobless Recovery --- An Oxymoron
Jobless Recovery ----- Every time I hear this term I want to vomit. Wikopedia states ---- A jobless recovery or jobless growth is a phrase used by economists to describe the recovery from a recession which does not produce strong growth in employment. How can we possibly recover if we aren't creating jobs? The September unemployment rate is in. We lost another 263,000 jobs and unemployment in this country is now at 9.8%. Tell one of those hundreds of thousands of people that are out of work that the economy is in recovery and they are liable to smack you in the mouth.

Leadership Development during a Recession
Listen, times are tough. Some of you may even be facing economic crisis. Keep in mind that as a leader you don’t create crisis. But, a crisis can create leaders. Now is the time to leverage the current economic crisis to enhance leadership development within your company. Ask yourself these questions: • What kind of example are you setting during these tough economic times? The majority of your employees have probably never experienced a recession. • What kind of knowledge or experience are you passing down? • Are you living up to your responsibility to have a personal impact on leadership development within the organization? • What kind of mentor have you been? • Are you allowing your employees to stretch – to fail – to grow? • Are you empowering and demonstrating faith and trust in your employees?

Let’s Face It --- The Economy Sucks
Let’s face it --- “The Economy Sucks.” But, being in a recession is not something most of us havn’t ever experienced before. Simply put, there are good times when things are going well and it’s easy to make money, and there are bad times, when it’s much more difficult to make money. When this recession started, officially at the end of 2007, we enjoyed an extended period of exceptionally good business conditions. Revenue and profits exceeded most of our expectations. During these times leadership and success often came much easier than it should have. Too much good can often dull the edge necessary to excel in tougher times.

Maintaining Company Stability --- Contingency Planning
A “Contingency Plan” is a plan developed for a specific situation when things “could” go wrong or are going wrong. Contingency plans include specific strategies, initiatives and actions designed to deal with identified variances to assumptions. These variances usually result in a particular problem, emergency, or state of affairs. The plan also includes a monitoring process and “triggers” for initiating planned actions.

Profit Covers Many Sins --- Cleaning Up the Mess
Simply put, there are good times when things are going well and it’s easy to make money, and there are bad times, when it’s much more difficult to make money. Prior to 2008 we had a run of good times that exceeded most of our expectations. I have often said that it didn’t take a genius to make money during that run. However, “Profit covers many sins”. That means that many of us got a little complacent. Maybe we didn’t quite run our business following absolute best practice. Maybe some of us overlooked less than the best performance expected from our employees. Maybe we were a little too compassionate regarding employee effectiveness and as a result we haven’t “weeded the garden” to allow our good employees to flourish.

Recession --- Its Time You Ended
We should have recognized the signs. We should have seen the red flags. Thousands of employees were being laid off. Now, we are told things are starting to get better. We are in recovery, albeit a "Jobless Recovery". Give me a break. Every time I hear that term I want to puke. Until the unemployment rate decreases in the majority of our states - we will all feel the results of the recession. Tell those people in the unemployment line that the recession is over and risk getting punched in the face.

The Sky Isn’t Falling
Some of you may be taking the attitude that now is the time to hunker down, cut costs and go into a cautious no risk taking mode while putting duct tape on your wallets and purses. Although I believe caution is prudent and contingency planning may be essential I’d like to stress that you shouldn’t make blind assumptions and react too quickly without doing a complete analysis of your independent customer base and markets.

Cycle City declares bankruptcy
A lot of bargain hunters were picking up deals. I noticed one of the owners behind the parts counter dispensing friendly advice to a customer. At least he didn't seem bitter about his failed business venture. While browsing about the store I heard at least one person comment on the bankruptcy that “it was a sign of the times.” I couldn't help but wonder what this bankruptcy might be really a sign of.

There is very little, if anything, that you and I can do about these conditions on a global or national basis, but we can have an immense impact where it really matters in our own home and business.

The Future of Home Based Business
After the barbarian economic downturn and the lenghty recession that is still reeking havoc on the world. And people are still despite of the recession buying into home based business. Taking the training made available and taking action with it and are building some impressive small businesses ran from home.

Business Trends You Must Face to Thrive
In every economy, business leaders need to adjust their strategies to what is going on and will be going on around them. You can usually see these trends and they will be good or bad depending on the industry you are in and how and if you respond. Companies need to prepare their offensive strategies coming out of the recession, regardless of how fast or slow that may be, the reality is that we eventually will have a good economy again.

How do Churches Cope with the Recession?
Some scoffers find it hard to believe that churches not only get through hard times but that they actually grow in members and tithes and “donations” from existing church members. The press has always been antagonistic towards the Christian church so what I say here will probably be fodder for some good laughs for non-believers, but I will say it anyway. It is not their favor that I seek.

Can The US Spend Their Way To Economic Stability, And What Will Be The Long Term Bill?
The US Government is trying to avoid recession by replacing consumer spending with government rescue packages. This will be great if it works, but with increased spending that will ultimately lead to increased inflation, this is a gamble that is unlikely to ultimately work and will saddle future generations with massive debt and a weakened social security system.

Watch out for the Talent Shortage Iceberg!
Sometimes in the midst of the current recession we forget that we have a looming talent shortage – and it will be here before we know it. You might even call it a looming Talent Shortage Iceberg! Take the shipping industry for example. Even as the rescission has reduced the volume of shipping in the last two years, shipping volume overall is up substantially compared to ten years ago. The number of tankers in the ocean, worldwide, rose 17% between 2001 and 2005 and container ships jumped by 30%. With this increase comes the need for talented deck and engineering officers-but the industry is already finding it hard to recruit qualified officers.

In the Darkest Hour: Start Something New
Starting a business was always a dream; so much in fact that it grew and grew in its importance to me as I progressed through college. Lesson #3: Go Big or Go Home
“If you’re not a risk taker, you should get the hell out of business,” Kroc once said. He didn’t build a franchise empire with over 3,000 stores in just ten years by sitting back and repeating the same formula that had worked once over and over again. Instead, Kroc strove to constantly improve his company and retain his place at the forefront of the industry by taking advantage of new opportunities. Even when there was big risk involved, Kroc stared the gamble in the face and rolled the dice.

From his marble-lined hotels to his billion-dollar golf courses, little about Donald Trump would suggest bankruptcy. However, in his early years, Donald Trump was no different from every other entrepreneur who struggles to grow their business. In fact, he came so close to the brink of bankruptcy on more than one occasion that his success today is all the more remarkable.

No Holds Barred: Schwartz Takes Onex to the Top
In 1983, Schwartz founded Onex with one single mission at hand: to search for and acquire under-managed and undervalued companies, streamline their operations, and sell the acquisitions for a profit after their asset bases had been added to. Early on, Schwartz focused on purchasing such big name companies as Purolator Courier Ltd., an in-flight catering company called Sky Chefs Inc., and Beatrice Foods. He sought to acquaint himself with companies that already had a recognized brand name that he could draw upon.

Lesson #5: A Strong Work Ethic is A Work Essential
Lauren grew up in the Bronx, a far cry from the fashion capital of New York. He never went to fashion school, never graduated from college, and never lived the life of class and luxury. So how did this boy who shared a small bedroom with his two older brothers go on to become not only a billionaire, but also an ambassador for a world he never knew? The answer is that he worked hard for it.

Venture Capital & Recessions
Lots of talk in the venture business, as everywhere else, about the impact of recessions on the business. In general, recession vintage venture funds have been among the better-performing funds. Here are some related points:

Celebrate Your Victories

Many astute leaders took the opportunity presented by the recession to weed the garden and upgrade their work force. We need to make sure we don't recreate the same culture or level of complacency that we had to address in dealing with the recession.

Build a Financial Plan “as you see it”

Using your dreams and goals to create wealth Part 1
I thought, you can go where you want to go and do what you want to do, when you want to do it. What I had to discover-and in fact didn't discover for many years-was that having the money wasn't as important as knowing what to do with the money once I got it. In reality, as it turned out, money was only a tool.

First Step-Using your dreams and goals to create wealth Part 2
To take your first step and set your mind on the course to financial success, you must begin to dream. You must begin to envision the kind of life you desire. For some of you, this will be easy, because you have dreamed all your life. For others, it will be more difficult. Why? Dreaming is fun, isn’t it? Part 3
Someone once said that what the mind can see, the body can achieve. I believe it. I go a step further. I believe that the mind must see it before the body is able to work for it. Look at another realm of human endeavor: sports. When Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile, he saw it long before he did it. Over and over in his mind, he later recalled, he visualized doing what had been deemed to be impossible. Interestingly enough, once Bannister did what no one else had ever done before, others quickly succeeded in doing it.

A millionaires dreams
Financial freedom is your dream. As long as you can dream, you can continue to succeed. Show me a person who has no dream, and I will show you someone who is poor. A millionaire dreams, and then sets out to make those dreams real. Once you stop dreaming, you stop the magic. That’s because you have created the world you wanted. You stop moving forward, because your dreams have ended. Either you are content to live with what you have or you are constantly frustrated because you don’t have enough-or you learn to dream again.

Principles of Wealth Creation
To accomplish your goal of becoming financially free, you will need to master specific principles of wealth creation. Mental Toughness=Profits and Success Today
All sizes and shapes of companies are focused on survival in what Tom Peters calls our “Looney” times today. And, I have focused a lot on survival strategies with my clients. However, strategies, tactics, methods, and techniques are not the total answer. My thinking about survival in our recession has been profoundly influenced by a book called "Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why" by Laurence Gonzales. It's a book that chronicles incredible stories of survival in plane crashes, getting lost at sea, surviving in Arctic temperatures for weeks, etc. And one theme comes through like a beacon. It is not the physically strong that survive. Surviving [and profiting from this recession] all starts with a single decision.

In addition, many news stories have been carrying the headline of 'deflation.' Deflation is actually an uncommon climate here in the U.S., but anything is possible. Preparing for the upturn - Retaining and attracting the best skills in the market.
With the first signs of economic recovery upon us employers need to be prepared for the upturn, they need to focus on retaining skills and keep employees engaged in their work, if voluntary turnover increases after an economic downturn, then companies have to bear the costs to recruit, train, and attract new employees to replace those who have left. Replacing lost employees quickly becomes expensive. Not only does turnover have financial implications, it also impacts workplace performance. However this is just the tip of the iceberg as customer relationships are impacted, knowledge is lost and often other employees have to pick up the slack, causing increased levels of stress among the remaining workforce.
