The Importance of Building Your Business Reputation Online
| |
| If you want to be taken seriously as a successful online business owner, you need to build a serious online business reputation. Preferably one that will encourage people to trust you and your products/services. And while some might try to convince you otherwise, a good reputation cannot be bought for the price of a good website, some clever SEO practices, and some fake social networking attempts.
The problem with reputations is that they can take years to build up. Rome may not have been built in a day, but it was very probably built quicker than a good reputation. Many newcomers to the online business world have been swayed by fancy promises of making money faster than Michale Shumacher can get round the grand prix circuit. |

Lesson #1: Make a Commitment to Your Brand
| |
| Many before him had tried, but Gallo was able to do something that no one else had ever successfully done before: he introduced wine to a country that was only used to drinking liquor and beer. How did he do it? By building a brand that would stick, and by refusing to abandon that brand in the face of market pressure. |

Be Consistent & Keep Your Customers Happy
| |
| One of the things that frustrate me the most as a customer is inconsistent service standards, inconsistent procedures and people’s inability to deal effectively and honourably with different types of people. If left unchecked this leads to confusion, frustration, wasted time, wasted effort, impaired brands and reputations, lost revenue and lost customers.
These issues don’t seem to be as much of an issue when you deal with very small companies because usually everyone knows what everyone else is doing and how it should be done even if it is only via word of mouth. However as businesses expand and get on board more people to work in the front line you, as the customer can’t always expect to get the same person to deal with then the challenges begin. |

Innovation minus Support = Zero Creation
| |
| There is an abundance of creativity in our world. Humanity is replete with inspirational people who have enormous value to contribute in their own ways - yet most are never seen or heard. As a collective society, we seldom encourage others to take a path of innovation because it's untested, risky, and breaks convention and related reputations. |

Are You Rude on The Internet? It Can Hurt Your Business.
| |
| I don’t know about you but I’ve noticed a disturbing trend occurring both on the Internet and in real life. The trend is rudeness. I watched a taping of Oprah tonight (see the CNN breakdown of this show here) that enlightened me to a book, a doctor and a quote that made the light bulbs go off. Dr. PM Forni wrote a book called, “Choosing Civility: The Twenty-Five Rules of Considerate Conduct” and although I have not read it yet, you bet it will be in my next book store purchase. |

The Essence of Ethics
| |
| It's difficult to define, exactly, what ethical behavior is; and it's impossible to measure. But we can sense when ethics are present in an individual or a company culture - and especially we sense it when they're not. Ethical behavior is a two-way street. Companies and customers cannot effectively engage unless there is trust between them. And, to my point in this article, neither can companies and candidates. |

Online business: Build a reputation
| |
|
When someone is making a decision to do business with you, they want to know about your reputation. A well built reputation will inspire confidence in you. Your service or your product is part of your reputation. Standing behind your product or service helps build a reputation for your online business. Since many online businesses depend entirely on the internet for marketing purposes, your reputation matters. |

What’s up with Personal Branding, and why you should consider it
| |
| In recent years, the concept of personal branding has been getting more and more attention. The basic premise of this is that over the course of your career, you would benefit from creating “Brand You” as a way to differentiate yourself from other jobseekers, business developers, vendors, and people in general. |

Reap Rewards with the Right Reputation
| |
| We’ve all heard the old cliche, “Under-Promise and Over-Deliver”. It’s easier said than done, isn’t it? Today, in these challenging economic times, many people tend to promise prospective customers more so they perceive the value as better than what a competitor can offer. Those same people also enjoy over-promising to make themselves feel more valued. Do they not think these actions will come back to haunt them? The overall point I’d like to make today is that we cannot build a reputation for ourselves or our company by what we say we can do. We build good reputations by delivering what our customers need. |

Sales Values
| |
| I just finished reading an excellent book about the history of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Interestingly enough, it’s simply called “Harley-Davidson.” This is an unusual read for me since I am not a Harley owner nor do I own or even ride motorcycles. But I am interested in learning about how successful companies got their start and grew over the years, and this book was very interesting and educational, and loaded with the most beautiful pictures of motorcycles that one could imagine. At one point there was a picture of the company’s value statements. |

Do You Have a Reputation?
| |
| When I was growing up, we wanted to avoid being someone with a “reputation. Today, we want a reputation, but we need it to be positive. However, maintaining one’s reputation is getting harder and harder. As social media and social networking sites continue to flourish, the power of the individual voice is growing greatly. We have to protect our reputations, and have someone (it’s probably you) that is fully in charge of managing our online reputation. It may seem insignificant now, but new things on the horizon will make this a part of any businessperson’s life. |

That Beast - Google Search
| |
| Potential employers are no longer settling for the pristine resume, stellar references and sharp business suits (although these do play an integral role in the hiring process). In a recent report conducted by Microsoft, in 2010, they found that 79% of hiring managers vigilantly screened the online reputations of potential employees looking for a job; and of those 79%, 70% rejected job applicants based on the results populated mainly through Google search. |
