Marks and Spencer, India Strategy Review - Important Lessons for Retailers
Smriti Mehrotra, vice president of a media channel, works in close proximity to the Marks & Spencer’s store in Phoenix Mills, Mumbai. Being a compulsive shopper and a brand loyalist, Smriti is exactly the kind of customer, who will eventually increase sales at M&S. However, she rarely visits the store unless she needs to buy gift hampers for special occasions. “I can never manage to get my size at the M&S store. You have heard the phrase 'walk-the-talk', people are watching you and based on your behavior they develop perceptions and will act accordingly. As an observer of an organization, it is very easy to identify the culture, one visit to a store, one interaction with the sales team, or customer service department will provide you with an indication of what is happening in that organization.

Double Marginalization and the Decentralized Supply Chain
Double marginalization is defined as the “exercise of market power at successive vertical layers in a supply chain.” Dating back to Lerner (1934) the problem that arises as a result of double marginalization is tied to an impetus to mark up the product’s price above marginal cost. Double Marginalization and the Point of Ideal Price Viability
Referencing my last post (Double Marginalization and the Decentralized Supply Chain, August 9, 2007) double marginalization “DM” is defined as the “exercise of market power at successive vertical layers in a supply chain.” The problem that arises as a result of DM is tied to an impetus to mark up the product’s price above marginal cost. The sequence of mark-ups “leads to a higher retail price and lower combined profit for the supply chain.” In short, DM drives the paradoxical outcome of higher buy prices with lower sell profits.
