RAMP UP YOUR BRAND - SLEDGEHAMMERS AND SERVICE BRAND PREFERENCE
| |
| By Mike Schultz and John Doerr
Swing the Hammer
Imagine the strongman game at the carnival. You lift the sledgehammer over your head and swing it down onto the platform. When it strikes the target, a metal cylinder rises up and up—20 feet up the pole until it rings the bell. On its way down the pole the cylinder passes the same words it passed on the way up: strongman, tough guy, athlete, junior, and weakling.
In a way, establishing a services brand follows a similar process. You swing the hammer (your marketing tactics, the marketing mix you employ, and the quality of your company's services) and the strength of your efforts determine whether or not your brand moves up the pole and makes it to the top to ring the bell.
The question is, “What stages must your brand pass through in order to ring the bell?”

The First 100 Days
| |
| All the pomp and circumstance of the inauguration is behind us. President Obama is in office and ready to go. Now the countdown begins on The First 100 Days. The First 100 Day Plan sets the tone and focus for an incoming President. It’s a must for the leaders of the free world.
As leaders of our own worlds, shouldn’t we also have a 100 day plan to set the tone and focus for our “term”? Its’ not too late. We are only 28 days into 2009!
The nature of a plan is that it is written down. Writing down your 100 day goals creates tremendous power.

Are the only people that CALL YOU Telemarketers?
| |
| How frustrating is it when the phone rings, (RING, RING!) and you say to yourself; “great an opportunity I don’t have to chase!”
Then the person on the other end of the phone opens the conversation with; “Am I speaking with the business owner?” and you realise, quickly, that it’s yet another (bloody) telemarketer! “Damn you telemarketer!” you say under your breath, as you politely tell them you’re not interested and promptly hang up. |

Are Telemarketers the only people that CALL YOU?
| |
| Picture this: You are sitting at your desk going through your To Do list and suddenly the phone rings, ¡§RING, RING!¡¨ Given you know how challenging lead generation can be, you say to yourself, ¡§Great this could be an opportunity I don¡¦t have to chase!¡¨ |

Lesson #1: “I learned to make people love me to get my message across.”
| |
| As a boxer, Foreman was known as a mean and ruthless fighter. He fought with fury rather than grace; he stormed around the ring with rage while his opponents danced around him. He even showed up to fight Muhammad Ali with a fierce German Shepherd at his side. It was not so much a persona as his actual personality. He was unpopular both in the ring and out, and unless he was willing to make some changes, Foreman knew that nobody would want to listen to him talk, let along buy anything from him. |

Positive Words Create Positive Actions
| |
| In our society today we tend to accentuate the negatives instead of the positives. One example is the “alarm clock” we use to wake ourselves up in the morning. Realistically, when we hear an alarm it generates fear or anxiety. When somebody robs a bank, an alarm is sounded; when there’s a fire, someone sounds an alarm. Perhaps waking up to an alarm helps explain the profusion of negative words we use. If you rethink the issue of your clock you will realize that it is really giving you an opportunity. When you hear it ring, you have the opportunity to get up and go. A whole day full of possibilities is available to you once you hear your “opportunity clock.” If you can’t hear it ring, that might mean you’ve gotten up and gone! That could be bad. |

Enhancing Your Business Language
| |
| What we say matters in communication. How we say it is just as important. According to Albert Mehrabian, 7 percent of face-to-face communication is words (language), and tone (38 percent). Over the telephone, words hold more weight because if we don’t understand the language used (foreign), then tone becomes irrelevant. Monotone languages (like Malay and English) are easier to learn, whereas multi-tone languages (Mandarin, for instance) is harder to master as there are four tones. |
