A Fresh Face in the World: Mary Kay Ash is Born
“Most people live and die with their music still unplayed,” Mary Kay Ash once said. “They never dare to try.” Ash was not one of those people. Raised in a time when few women were in business, let alone successful in business, Ash broke down barriers on her rise up to creating a multi-billion dollar operation. Today, Mary Kay Cosmetics Inc. continues to be a leader in the industry, with outlets in over 30 countries that are staffed by 1.6 million employees.

Stealth Market Research & Google Movies
I love stealth market research -- that is, unusual ways of figuring out what companies and competitors are doing. There are all sorts of ways of doing this sort of thing, from counting cars in company parking lots on outward. But there is no denying that technology continually creates new ways of ethically observing companies, and therefore new kinds of stealth research.

Never Just Sit There or Stand There When It Comes To Your Marketing Efforts
Will Rogers said, “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there." This quote really reinforces the message I am sending in the article. The beginning of a new business year is a great time to look at your marketing efforts and develop an honest assessment of what has worked well and what is not working. And if you have just completed a very successful year or let’s say a record-breaking year, Congratulations! But, please reread Will Roger’s quote to remind yourself that in spite of your success in the past, you cannot just sit there or stand there and be complacent for the year ahead. And by the way – if you did not have a good year last year, the same advice applies. Your strategic thinking business coach suggests 8 actions to avoid just sitting or standing there with your marketing efforts.

How to Identify and Break The Self-Destructive Habit of Complacency In Your Business
One of my favorite Will Rogers quotes is: “Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.” And this is so applicable to what I am seeing in too many businesses today. In fact, it has been a major topic of conversation in the coaching of one of my major clients that is very concerned with complacency in their company. Complacency can be absolutely poisonous to businesses chances for success. Complacency is confirming that you and your business are in a rut and you have decided to stay there. Well, just as Will Rogers warns us about sitting on the right track and getting run over, if your business stays in a rut it too will remain stuck and will get run over too. If you or others in your business suffer from this habit, try one or more of the following preventions and cures immediately!

Management and Mentoring with Unconditional Positive Regard
This article is the first of a series of three covering the core conditions model developed by Carl Rogers and its application to Management and Mentoring. These core conditions were developed for use in Person Centred Counselling Psychotherapy and from my experience have great relevance to Management in general and my Mentoring practice in particular. Carl Rogers’ view was that everyone should be judged positively no matter what (and I mean no matter who they are or what they have done). Rogers described it as “Unconditional Positive Regard” or UPR for short. The Rogerian view is that everyone is born with a positive approach but held back by externally imposed “Conditions of Worth”.

Entrepreneuers Beware: -- Cool is not enough
Every entrepreneur should watch this movie at least three times. I watched Cool Hand Luke on TV the other night. It is an old movie (1967) staring Paul Newman in the lead role along with George Kennedy. There is an assortment of other actors who I recognized more by their voices than their very young faces - including Wayne Rogers from the MASH TV series, and Dennis Hopper. The story is set in 1948 at a Southern US chain-gang prison. It lives up to the label of a classic movie - enjoyable to watch and full of powerful messages.

The Curse of A Lottery Mindset
In a recurring familiar episode of the so called "Curse of Lottery", Yahoo Buzz features story of a female teenager that won $3 million in lottery and lost it in just six years. In an article from AOL, Ms Rogers lamented that "I honestly wish that I'd never won the lottery money-and knowing what I know now, I should have just given it back to them". The atypical overt response of lottery winners, to the sudden win, in form of shock, crying, nervous breakdown and death exemplifies the lack of winner's mindset prior to affluent. Contrast these responses to Tiger Woods' response to winning another green jacket or Barrack Obama's reaction to winning the presidency..........

Parents Can Accelerate their Children's Ability to Learn
Parents can accelerate their children's ability to learn and resolve conflict constructively - by mastering the Skills of Listening. Will Rogers accurately describes the fact that most parents have never evaluated their ability to listen to their children. He says, "The trouble with people is not what they know. It's what they know that ain't so." The fact is that 95% of parents may not listen to their children.

Innovation In A Static World
Everett Rogers' theory on the Diffusion of Innovators. Rogers was a sociologist who, at the age of thirty, wrote that diffusion is, "the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among the members of a social system." Rogers basically demonstrated that change agents can be broken down into their rate of adoption.

Leadership and Learning are Indispensable
The great American founding father, author, and statesman, Benjamin Franklin, was highly devoted to life long learning and continual personal improvement. His book, The Art of Virtue (edited by George Rogers), is an inspiring account of Franklin's life and an instructive guide to his improvement process and personal effective system. Franklin once said, "If you empty your purse in your head, no one can take it away from you. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest."
