Keeping Fear Alive
| |
| As an example of how pervasive the word fear has become in our daily lives, on the front page of this morning’s (10/11) Los Angeles times, two story headings caught my attention. One said “Cost Fears Cited in Fire Delay” and the other screamed “Fear and mistrust rule in high-stakes Iraqi politics.” |

Carved in Granite
| |
| In the Black Hills of South Dakota, carved in granite, the six-story faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt create a grand impression viewed from a distant, or standing on the national monument's viewing terrace. Visiting Mount Rushmore on vacation, I found the documentary of its making fascinating. Weeks later, one story stayed with me.

Saying Thank You
| |
| US President Theodore Roosevelt has been described as founder of the Bull Moose Party, the man who led his troops up San Juan Hill in the Spanish-American War, a big game hunter, family man, civic servant and a host of other things. |

Lesson #4: Network to Bring Others Into the Know
| |
| By the end of World War II, L.L. Bean products were being found in the homes of everyone from Calvin Coolidge and Franklin Roosevelt to Doris Day, Babe Ruth, and the Aga Khan. Even John Wayne took off his country western getup to wear something a la L.L. Bean every now and then. But, was this just coincidence? Or was it part of a larger strategy on Bean’s part to grow his business by networking and creating word of mouth? |

Dreams CAN Come True Heres How
| |
| Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” and there are also numerous studies that prove the value of writing down and keeping track of your thoughts and goals. Here are three strategies that have worked for me in helping me to achieve more in life. |

Presidential List
| |
| I read an article recently that made a lot of sense to me. Doris Kearns Goodwin is a Pulitzer Prize winner for her books on history, and she made a list of ten points that are important for a President to consider and to emulate if they hoped to be great. She has written books about Abraham Lincoln and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and she believes leadership strengths should be considered carefully before voting. Here are some of the attributes that she feels make for a great leader--and I agree! |

CONFIDENCE BOOSTERS
| |
| As you're probably only too aware, our confidence and self esteem are very variable - more of a wavy line than a straight line. Some days we feel we could conquer the world and other days we just want to hide under the duvet!
We can miss opportunities because we allow fear and self doubt to get in the way. We undermine our confidence by taking things too personally and by trying to second guess what others think of us. I love the phrase: "What you think of me is none of my business!" And Eleanor Roosevelt famously said: "No-one can make you feel inferior without your permission." |

Do Publicity Stunts Work? As Sarah would say, 'You Betcha!'
| |
| Publicists have long put a human face on a story. Hollywood celebrities promote causes. Victims flee hurricanes. President Roosevelt once dispatched photographers to take compelling pictures of victims of the dust bowl of the 1930's to evoke sympathy for them. When orchestrated right, stunts can be powerful media exposure generators.

Blazing Our Own Improvement Path
| |
| A timeless principle of inside out leadership is continuous personal growth. When U.S. Supreme Court associate justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., was hospitalized at the age of 92, President Roosevelt went to visit him. He found Holmes reading a Greek Primer. "Why are you reading that?" the president asked. The great jurist replied, "Why, Mr. President, to improve my mind." |

Eleanor Roosevelt Teaches Sales 101
| |
| Whenever I hear a prospect tell me "no" I think of Eleanor Roosevelt who once said, "Never take a "no" from someone that can't say "yes". How true...
Many times the prospect that says "no" cannot say "yes" either because they aren't a decision-maker, or they are the wrong person to be speaking to in the first place. Of course the prospect never tells you they can't say "yes". So it's up to you to find out!
Next time a prospect tells you "no", follow Eleanor Roosevelt's rule, and make sure that you're getting a valid "no" from the prospect you're speaking with, and not from someone that can only say "no" because they can't say "yes". |

Why Running Your Business Alone Never Works
| |
| Theodore Roosevelt once said, ‘The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.’ |
