My Sales Force Needs a Make Over
One reader emailed that he just inherited a radio station in Honduras, has never sold before, and he and his salespeople aren't able to book appointments. Another reader is the Sales Director for several well-known magazines and said that her top producing team is down 50% from last year. Yet another reader wrote and wanted to know how to chop her 2-3 year sales cycle down to 2-3 months. And one President fired all of his salespeople, is back on the road selling and wonders what he can do to thrive. What do all four of these scenarios have in common?

5 Things Your Sales Force Can Do to Thrive in this Economy
One of my clients recently completed a transformation. I helped them transform their salespeople from account managers to hunters and closers, from order takers to consultative salespeople and from selling on price to selling at their price - all while selling into one of the markets most devastated by the recession.

Inspiring Innovation & Creativity through Business Systems
Ok, I admit: "I am a big fan of systems, Its all about Systems". It could just be the Mechanical Engineer and Business Analyst coming out in me, but it goes much deeper than that. It is definitely grounded in my recent experiences with systems. We are surrounded by systems, and our lives revolve around them and rely on them working infallibly. The cars (or motorbikes) we drive, the computers we use and the human bodies we live in, are all brilliantly refined and intricate systems that we use everyday. We expect them to work predictably and consistently every time we use them.

The Key to High Sales Productivity
Issue most often raised by my clients is better time management. People have tried prioritizing tasks, blocking out parts of their day for certain tasks, implementing new systems and getting better at delegation. But, the key to high sales productivity is energy management.

Creating an effective sales performance management system
Following on from last week’s article about managing and measuring the right things in sales, I thought it would be worth looking at some of the key principles for effective sales performance management systems. The first place to start is to align your sales performance management system and subsequent key measures to your organisation’s strategy and goals. It’s then the job of the CEO and the Sales Leader to ensure the organisation (that means everyone else who supports the sales effort) is aligned to the sales performance management system. When this dimension is in place the organisation is best placed to sustain high sales performance.

Lead the way
Sales needs to be led from the top and it needs to be on the agenda of the ‘C’ suite, and this will mean from the CEO down, including the CFO, COO, and CIO. Even if the ‘C’ suite never has contact with an external customer (which I strongly advise against) they need to know how to lead, sell in, and support the sales effort. Why? Despite millions, if not billions, of dollars being invested in sales training, CRM systems and the like, many leaders are realising that their frontend processes, backend systems, culture (including those staff who have not traditionally seen themselves involved in sales), and sales methodologies are not aligned with their customers.

Performance Management
A relatively new management buzz phrase, performance management, has been gaining popularity recently. Management, particularly sales management, has always been about getting results so clearly whatever sales managers have been doing prior to the emergence of this new concept should also be known as performance management. The article explains the tasks required to maximize performance.

The Power is in the Question
Does sales management seem to be lost in the wilderness at your company? Was your sales manager your top rated sales person that you promoted based on sales performance? Did your sales manager ever receive any formal sales management training? Do you think your sales force needs to be more aggressive? Are you following best practice principles?
