| Orfalea had been a student at USC when he noticed a copy machine in the school library. He realized that few people had access to the new technology and decided to do something about it. With a $5,000 loan from the bank, Orfalea rented out a 100-square-foot garage behind a hamburger stand near his campus. In addition to selling school supplies, Orfalea bought a copier and began charging 2.5-cent copies. The store was so small that the copier had to be used out on the sidewalk in front. He called his business “Kinko’s” after his childhood nickname. |

| Mercedes, McDonalds, Wal-Mart. Like them or not, you probably have an idea of what these companies stand for and what you will get from them. For example, I probably wouldn't go to Wal-Mart to shop for a suit to wear to my next professional speaking engagement. I would, however, readily head off to Wal-Mart for back-to-school shopping for my elementary-school-age children, and homeware supplies. Upon my arrival I would fully expect to be warmly greeted by a smiling face at the door and to find an ample supply of family necessities at a fair and reasonable price. This is their brand impression. |

Not Just Treasure in Heaven Alliance for Christians in Development ACID to Grant Micro Loans to Benefit Ugandan Schoolchildren

| The Alliance for Christians in Development (ACID) Trust, a non-governmental development organization based in Uganda which, among other projects, provides microfinance services to rural women and youth, will be extending micro loans to parents who cannot afford to pay their children’s school fees. Typically, fees cost about USD 35 per term. A September 2006 report (pg 4) by Save the Children indicated that 1.1 million primary-aged children in Uganda are out of school, the majority because they cannot afford uniforms, books, and basic supplies. Under ACID Trust’s program, the plan is that parents will borrow from the trust interest-free, invest the money to make a profit, pay back the loan and save the remainder to put toward their children’s education. |
