MySpace Mavericks: How Two Friends Found Their Fortune
| |
| “It's certainly nice to make money off of it and become financially successful,” says DeWolfe, “but really the fun of it was to build the site and that continues to be the fun of it.” Anderson echoes the sentiment: “I’d like to do this as long as it’s fun, and that could be a long, long time.” They started off as two men who shared nothing but a love of indie music, a distaste for authority, and a simple idea for a website. So, how did these fast friends find themselves not only in the pages of Fortune magazine but also at the forefront of an Internet revolution? |

The Shapes That Model Retail
| |
| There has been a tremendous amount of discussion by economists and government experts in regard to the type of recession we are in, as well as the possible ways we could come out of it. There are varied opinions and speculation as to where things go from here. This is pretty clearly demonstrated in the different models, or 'shapes', that the recovery might take, which have come to be characterized by various letters of the alphabet. Although Economists may track and analyze a number of economic issues and trends that would also impact retailers, it is from an aggregate level. So the question is, what will the economic recovery look like at a place where all the trends come together at once - such as in your own company’s financials?

Waiting for a Pullback!
| |
| The past week in gold, silver, oil, natural gas and the broad market wasn’t anything to write home about. We are seeing controlled profit taking which is making the market choppy. Many traders are getting very bearish on the market which is a good thing in my opinion. According to my market internals, sentiment and volume analysis we should get a shake out (sharp dip) which would make traders exit their positions before the market continues higher. |

Conversational engagement versus static accessibility: sharing knowledge in the 21st century
| |
| Key points
• Old mindsets must be set aside in favor of a more progressive view that is commensurate with the growing awareness that an organization’s purchasing team is not merely a functional extension of another department, but plays a critical strategic role in the emerging global enterprise.
• This is not just limited to purchasing, as both CIOs and CFOs are going through a transformation that is based on a collaborative versus a siloed view of organizational duties and complacent relationships.
• A key enabler for this change in outlook is the various social networks and mediums. But it is painfully apparent that the recognition of how social networks can and ultimately will influence both conversational insight and the purchasing function itself is lost on the majority of procurement professionals.

Does YOUR Elevator Take People Up?
| |
| Who doesn't enjoy receiving kudos for a job well done, or good effort
put forth, but how often do we think to dole them out to others. It's easy to
get caught up in the flurry of work and home activities, and checking off the
to-do list; taking dear family and friends a bit for granted.

SERVICES SELLING I DIDNT RAISE YOU TO BE A SALESMAN
| |
| By Mike Schultz and John Doerr
Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be salesboys
Don't let 'em sell siding or drive them big trucks
Have 'em be consultants and accountants and such.
Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be salesboys
'Cause they'll never stay home or they're on their cell phone
Even with family around.
With all due apologies to Willie Nelson, I am sure this was the sentiment of most of our parents. Yes, be a lawyer or accountant or even (heaven forbid) a consultant, but please don't ever come home and declare, “Mom, I found my calling. I am going to be a salesperson!”

How Dealing with Difficult People affects you?
| |
| The difficult person is someone we simply have to deal with. In those situations, we have three options. These options are: 1) Try to change ourselves, 2) Try to change the other person, and 3) Resolve to tolerate the situation – basically decide to put up with them. |

Public Sector Procurement and the Wal-Mart Effect
| |
| In Part 4 of my Changing Face of Procurement conference series titled Winning Strategies for Vendor Engagement I ask attendees the question; “is your current e-procurement initiative a threat or a benefit to your supply base?”
While the answer is of course important, what is of greater significance is whether or not your organization has even considered the impact its current strategy is having on these important external stakeholders.

What's Really Important to You?

| It's never easy to lose someone, but when they are so young, vibrant, and seem to have so much ahead of them it feels especially hard. She was very close to my age, so it really hit home. I've spent some time reflecting on just how precious my time on this earth really is and the importance of savoring all I have right now. I happened to recently hear the song 100 Years by Five for Fighting on the radio and it echoed this sentiment. |

Wag More, Bark Less
| |
| I confess, this title was not made up by me. My wife saw a bumper sticker with this sentiment and shared it with me. I think the basic wisdom in the phrase is great and wish there was a way to get more managers to understand the simple logic here. Why is it that some bosses feel compelled to bark when wagging is a much more expedient way to bring out the best in people? |
