Lesson #3: Mix Things Up
When Puck first began considering expanding his operations overseas in Japan, he claims he was drawn to the country because he loved “the culture, the food, the politeness of the people and the fact that I’ll always find new ideas for my profession.”

How to Evaluate a Franchisor’s Training Program
Not long ago I took a trip to Tuscany and spent a week in a cooking class. Before the trip I spent time researching my options. I wanted to know who would be teaching the class, what courses and dishes would be covered, how hand-on the class was, if wine-pairings with the dishes would be addressed and if the class included trips to the local farmer’s markets to select fresh produce. Finding just the right cooking school was important to me because I would be spending a significant amount of money traveling to Italy and I wanted my experience to be well worth my time and effort. For a woman interested in buying a franchise, evaluating the training a franchise business offers should involve even greater research – after all, this is about your future – not a vacation.

Turning up the Heat: Rachael Ray Is On Fire
The executives at Cowan and Lobel were not sure if hiring Ray to be the chef at their store was such a good idea in the end. Her prepared dishes were, after all, even outpacing the store’s grocery sales. But Ray had an idea to solve the problem.

Do You Have What It Takes To Become An Entrepreneur
Believe it or don't, I just flunked another test for "entrepreneurial" traits! From my test score, it appears I am probably better adapted to washing dishes than running a business. Then again, according to the governing laws of aerodynamics, Bumble Bees can't fly either. Let me tell you a TRUE STORY about those tests.

The Self Promotion Piece - Bringing a Graphics Standard into the Business World
All business owners are familiar with the corporate brochure, but rarely is it utilized in the same way by companies in non-creative fields. Most corporate brochures end up serving either as extended ads (too obviously self-serving, unless the ad is the purpose), or dry company profiles (which are, well, dry). I often suggest a more creative approach to my clients… a “show” rather than “tell”.

Community Involvement the Wrong Way
There are wrong ways to demonstrate community involvement as well. If you volunteer to work on a committee but are never available for meetings, or if you sponsor a little league team and don't show up for games, you're proving yourself to be crass and superficial, probably sucking up the community to get business instead of working for it for altruistic reasons. Consumers are more sophisticated than ever these days. People know the difference between serving the community and serving yourself. If you're not willing to devote honest time and energy to your community, you're better off skipping this weapon and leaving it to the real guerrillas in your community. I just hope for your sake that none are your direct competitors.

A Lesson on Success from Bruce Jenner
Bruce Jenner seemed to have it all. He was the 1976 Olympic decathlon champion who seemed too All-American to be true. He was the man on the Wheaties box and on the cover of Sports Illustrated. But in 1980, by his own account, you would never have recognized him. I was living in the hills outside of Los Angeles, in a one- bedroom bungalow-where the dirty dishes filled the kitchen sink and a dried-out Christmas tree from the holidays four months ago sat in a clump beside the door-serving as the only attempt at interior decoration. I'd lost between fifteen and twenty pounds and years of physical inactivity had left me looking thin. I probably needed a haircut, but living alone with nobody to talk to, I would have been the last to know.

Hawaii Vacation Rental Tips: Know What You Are Ordering in Honolulu!
One of the best ways for you to further enhance your stay in a Hawaii vacation rental is to get a taste of authentic Hawaiian foods. Although there are plenty of these dishes you can savor, you can also choose to dine in one of the many restaurants in the island such as Lei Lei’s Restaurant, Keoni by Keo’s, and Kaka’ako Kitchen.

About Those Good Dishes
A good friend of mine and brilliant coach and author, Jim Donovan, once wrote an excellent article on using your good dishes... it reminded me that I hadn't read these words of wisdom for quite a while and maybe now more than ever, we need to remind ourselves that we should "use our good dishes".

Organizational Measurement and Feedback Pathways and Pitfalls (Part One)
Far too many measures are designed to meet internal needs. They may satisfy management's command-and-control paranoia for "snoopervision" or they're designed to serve accounting information technology, human resources or other support departments. Numerous measures are also highly technical, production- or product What's often missing from these inward measurements is the customer. High performing organizations measure from the outside in along the customer-partner chain. They begin by measuring what's important to customers and pinpointing the performance gaps. Next on the measurement pecking order are the needs of those external and internal partners serving customers. Then attention turns to the people producing products or serving the servers.

Chlorinated Water + Antibacterial Dish Detergent= Poison
Thought washing dishes was a fairly benign activity? Apparently not. Research shows it’s more dangerous than you thought. If you have chlorinated water (which many do) and you use an antibacterial dish soap, you are being exposed to significant quantities of CHLOROFORM. How is this happening and what to do about it?
