Everyone wants to be successful but few people take the time and effort to define success on their own terms. We are bombarded by messages about what success looks like: owning the right car, living in a certain neighborhood with a certain size house, closing the big deal, becoming well-known, or growing your company to a certain size. To complicate the issue, many of us also get the message that our level of success means something fundamental about who we are – about our worth and value as human beings. I continue to enjoy watching the Olympic games on TV - winter sports are a favorite of mine. Not only do I get much personal pleasure watching the x-country skiing, the figure skating and the snow-boarding, to name a few of the sports, but I really love listening to the athletes as they are being interviewed. These young people are in a class of their own. I aspire to that level of excellence, both in my personal life and in my business.
Teaching Old Skiers New Tricks
We recently went on our final ski trip of the season to Maine and thought it would be a great idea to brush up on our skills by taking a couple of lessons. Our instructor turned out to be a twenty-something guy who talked a lot and knew his skiing inside and out. Our little group of students included two middle aged ladies from Montreal, a young couple from Boston, and a 73 year old man from Germany, who had skied all his life, but was trying out new parabolic skis for the first time.

The Principle of Telescopic Vision
Many years later I found myself instructing skiing. In a sport where gravity can be your friend or your enemy, your vision is very important. Again I learned that you must choose your path long before you get there. You must look far enough ahead that you can pick and place each turn. This makes skiing much more enjoyable. In fact it is important to actually ski the course in you mind before you even start your descent.
