There is a Storm Brewing - A Labor Storm
| |
| How long will this storm last? Have you prepared? Do you have an umbrella? Are you ready to head for the basement when the sirens roar?
Unfortunately, we don't have the technology to literally see the future. So, we must depend on studies and the research of futurists to be our crystal ball. We know a labor storm is brewing but we just don't know how intense it is going to be.

Look at the book shelves in any bookstore or library and today you will find a plethora of material providing the same basic message. There is no shortage of material explaining the “what”: there is, however, a shortage of material explaining “how” to enable one to shift the area of control in the brain so that everything else can follow.

Yet most businesses still only focus on the skills and abilities stated on job specifications. To ignore skills used in passionate leisure interests is a major loss to the workplace. |

Watch out for the Talent Shortage Iceberg!
| |
| Sometimes in the midst of the current recession we forget that we have a looming talent shortage – and it will be here before we know it. You might even call it a looming Talent Shortage Iceberg!
Take the shipping industry for example. Even as the rescission has reduced the volume of shipping in the last two years, shipping volume overall is up substantially compared to ten years ago. The number of tankers in the ocean, worldwide, rose 17% between 2001 and 2005 and container ships jumped by 30%. With this increase comes the need for talented deck and engineering officers-but the industry is already finding it hard to recruit qualified officers.

Soft Skills Training
| |
| It is often argued that the education of hard skills is becoming more prevalent in schools and, as such, graduates are coming out more skilled than ever. Hard skills relate to abilities that are testable, such as typing or mathematical skills. Unfortunately, soft skills are often neglected and today’s grads find themselves incredibly skilled but unable to practically implement what they’ve learned. Soft skills relate to teamwork and interpersonal skills. |

Making Money vs. Earning Money
| |
| There has never been a money shortage. There is, from time to time, an idea, inspiration, motivation, or creativity shortage. This shortage may manifest itself in the lack of money. It's important to realize that the only people who make money work at the mint. Everyone else earns money.
There is a fair exchange between what an individual does and what he is paid for completing that task. The pay for a task increases as its degree of difficulty, danger, expertise, or the amount of training required increases.
