Do You Have A Brainstorming Partner?
Most small business owners don't have a person or a group of people to effectively brainstorm with. Quite often, it's simply the business owner throwing his or her ideas on the table and the staff just nodding their heads in agreement without really bringing too much to the discussion. Or the owner simply talking to himself or herself. If you are a successful business owner or if you know any successful business owners, chances are pretty high that they'll have a brainstorming group they meet with regularly. They may refer to it as a mastermind group, a sounding board, a partner, a business coach, or just someone to bounce ideas off.

The Art of Firing
A few weeks ago I covered the topic of laying people off. In a sense, this is an easier process because it usually happens in bad times, and it doesn’t single a person out. A firing, by contrast, can occur in good times as well as bad times, and it’s highly personal.

Q&A - Problem with a mentor
Here's a tough situation a NeverEatAlone reader is having with his mentor (and that's the first problem -- only having 1 mentor!). My quick two cents follows. Also check out Chapter 29 in Never Eat Alone, "Find Mentors, Find Mentees, Repeat."

Strategy vs. Fundamentals
Creating companies is hard. Most fail. Overnight success is rare (my favorite “overnight success stories” are the ones that take 10+ years, like iRobot or Harmonix.) While strategy plays a key part in the outcome of an entrepreneurial venture, the fundamentals matter a lot. Take the following parable that I got from a friend recently.

Refill and Have Fun
It is a little known fact that fun is one of the secrets to sustainable success! The ability to have fun in every situation enables you to be more successful and more relaxed whether it is at home or at work. Oh sure, I can hear what you’re thinking. It’s the same words that come out of the mouths of my clients. Things like, “I couldn’t have fun at work, it would be unprofessional”, or “If I’m having fun I’m not being the best _____ (fill in the blank: spouse / executive / business owner / mother) I should be and I feel guilty about that”, and my favorite “I’m so busy, I don’t have TIME for fun”. Well, here are three reasons why I believe you must make time for fun and why it’s NOT a luxury item:

Support for your Business…Starting at Home
As things have been a bit crazy around our house since starting a home based business, I have been thinking how lucky and blessed that I am to have a husband who is supportive in my business endeavors. I hear time and time again from women that their spouses are not only unsupportive, but in fact they tease, taunt and try to make their wives feel like they are silly to even attempt a business. My heart goes out to these women, and it saddens me to hear stories like this. It is difficult to pursue a dream when the person who is to be your closest friend and supporter acts just the opposite. I sometimes wonder why some spouses act this way, but will never fully understand. I can only assume a variety of reasons: jealousy, fear of change, feelings of neglect.

PDF Your Board Package
Thankfully I no longer get fedexed binders of board packages from my portfolio companies in advance of a board meeting. Through the modern miracle of email, the board packages show up in my inbox – hopefully a few days (rather than a few hours – or even minutes) before the board meeting. The board packages tend to show up in three different formats – one that is easy to deal with, one that is ok, and one that sucks.

Do you serve on a board of directors and experience significant inaccuracies and inconsistencies in board minutes? The minutes also substantiate that a board is operating in accordance with its Bylaws and other documents and rules. Although there is recognition that board minutes are important, many organizations continue to have inadequate records of board meetings. Your strategic thinking business coach offers a list of the DO’s and DON’Ts of board meeting minutes.

The Board's Role in Fundraising
“Should my board help me raise funds?” The obvious answer is yes, of course they should! Now comes the hard part. Getting the board to actually raise money is a lot tougher than simply saying they should. Many nonprofits, of all sizes and types of mission, overlook the basic steps necessary to engage the board in effective fundraising.

The Gift Of Receiving
Every family has one. That one person who shoulders all the family burdens, keeps the family secrets and cleans up the family messes. The one who is everyone’s sounding board and shoulder to cry on. The one who remembers all the holidays, birthdays and anniversaries. The one around whom the family always gathers. In my family, it’s my grandma. She has been the rock in my family for as long as anyone can remember.

Nonprofit Board Member Manuals - What Should You Include?
When you have a board of directors, it is always a good idea to have a Board Member Manual. A Manual is a great tool for board members to use when they need quick and easy access to critical information about the organization. It compiles important documents into one binder, so they don't waste time and energy looking for what they need in several files or locations. Does your organization have a manual for its board members?
