The Power of the Word: Part 2
| |
| Charles Osgood, the “word merchant,” said that “compared to the spoken word, a picture is a pitiful thing, indeed.” C. J. Ducasse said that “to speak of mere words is much like speaking of mere dynamite.” The wisest man who ever lived said, “The right word spoken at the right time is as beautiful as gold apples in a silver bowl.” It has been said that the way people talk is the best indication of how they think, and the most powerful instrument for influencing a person’s thought process is the spoken word. |

Become a Master in Listening
| |
| Did you know that the Chinese symbol for listening consists of 10 distinct elements? They combine meanings like “king, ear, eye, heart, sense and respect” into one symbol.
What does that tell you? Obviously the entire culture of the Far East perceives listening as extremely valuable and is trained to get a lot of information beyond the spoken word: Context, emotion, cultural background or intentions.
As a sharp contrast, our Western culture emphasizes verbal and written expression, powerful speaking, articles and books as part of individual development. This cultural underpinning is subconscious and might impact our readiness to listen effectively.

What's YOUR Bottom Line?
| |
| "It is not how much you do, but how much love you put in the doing." Mother Teresa
Business owners are trained to gauge the success of their business according to the health of their "bottom line" - that is - the last line on a profit and loss statement that tells you what remains (if anything) after all your costs of doing business. This makes perfect sense - if you don't show a profit, you don't stay in business.

Are You as ‘Good as Your Word’?

| Giving our word and standing by it and being steadfast and reliable in our affairs are measures by which we judge commitment and integrity. For this reason, agreements—both spoken and implied—should be given thoughtful and careful attention. |

10 Lessons from the Sales Candidate Who Smelled Like He Peed on Himself
| |
| It was quite the claim. I remember telling my client that the next candidate we were to interview was the best sounding candidate I had ever spoken with on the phone. Robert, the sales manager, went to the lobby to get the candidate and returned, an ashen look on his face. Ray, the candidate, followed Robert into the conference room and suddenly, I had the same ashen look on my face. It seemed that the best candidate I had ever spoken with by phone was, well, a bum! |

Integrity as a Catalyst
| |
| Integrity has always been one of the qualities I admire and respect most in others. The definition of integrity is: The quality or condition of being whole or undivided; completeness. Simply put, someone who lives in integrity honors their personal values - actions and choices align with an internal code. There is nothing inside that is divided; they are whole. Honesty is another dimension to integrity -- spoken words reflecting the inner world without distortion. Integrity is also about honoring your word and following through with commitments. defi |

Chaos and Communication
| |
| A recent worldwide survey revealed that there are 6,800 languages and dialects spoken globally today. While I am often amazed how inaccurate communications can get, when you consider the number of languages spoken, it is somewhat amazing that we communicate at all.
It could be argued that most problems in human interaction arise from poor communication. Assuming that none of us set out to miscommunicate, it is important to explore why our best intentions to transfer knowledge, emotion, and details fall short. Remember, just because you're talking doesn't mean anyone's hearing. If they are hearing, it doesn't mean they're listening to you. Even if they are listening to you, it doesn't mean that they understand what you're saying.

Speaking with a Translator: Tips for Success
| |
| I’ve spoken everywhere from Beijing to Budapest, all across Mexico and Brazil as well as the U.S and Canada. One thing I’ve noticed in working with translators is that is the speaker’s job to make sure the audience understands every word.
Here are nine ideas to help you get your message across when you don’t speak the same language as your audience. |

Writing and Publishing eBooks Made Easy #03 Desinging Your eBook
| |
| The good news is that, with a few clicks of your mouse, you can convert your manuscript directly into an eBook. The most common file format for an eBook is Adobe Acrobat PDF.
You'll be doing the actual "design" of your book in your word-processing program.
Since Word is the most commonly used word processing program (and the one in which most e-publishers will expect your document), this chapter will focus on formatting in Word.
