We’ll meet again…
| |
| Ever been treated with an attitude of indifference? Ever been ignored as a customer because you didn’t look the part or didn’t fit the stereotype of a typical buyer? Ever been fobbed off in favor of someone else because you are (supposedly) not famous enough, well connected or prestigious enough to do business with?
The world is littered with stories of people who were passed over and ignored by judgmental, blinkered sales people only to take their business somewhere else where they were treated with respect and were able to buy what they wanted despite how they may have appeared to others. |

Therapy Should I or Shouldn’t I?
| |
| When I tell people that I’m a therapist/counsellor I usually get a couple of different reactions. One stereotype that abounds is that I deal with ‘crazy people’ and I work like the psychotherapist in the ‘Sopranos’. Another thing that happens is people start to tell me about ‘their friend’ who is having problems but doesn’t think it requires a therapist because their problems are that of ‘normal people’s problems’. This could not be farther from the truth. |

In Praise of Passion: Selling’s Secret Weapon
| |
| The stereotype many people have of salespeople is of an amoral hired gun. A sharp-suited, sharp-talking huckster who doesn’t care what he’s peddling as long as it brings in the money.
But in reality, the opposite is true of all truly successful salespeople: they have a real passion and belief in the products and services they sell.
This article explores the importance of passion - and how to incubate it in your sales team. |

How to Handle Objection When You Cold Call
| |
| We’ve all had the somewhat startling experience of thinking things are going really well during a cold call, and suddenly someone pulls back on us. They give us an “objection,” or just say something to end the conversation.
Most of us have been trained to overcome objections during our cold calls, and keep moving forward. The thinking is that if you’re persistent enough, then you’ll make the sale.
In other words, we’re supposed to bypass people's objections and concerns because we’ve already decided for them that they should buy what we have to offer. |

When to Say When
| |
| Do you know when to say "When"? Not to stereotype our gender, but it does seem that women seem to have a problem with being able to say "no" to the requests for our time, services and money. When friends and colleagues come to us for our expertise in what we do, we gladly give away our knowledge and insight. Many times though, this can also lead into using your skills and services. If this goes on without keeping it in check, soon you find that what you typically get paid for from your clients, you are now doing free for those close to you, which in turn, uses up too much of your time. |

Work at Home Moms and Their Bad Rap?
| |
| Beware, this is a tad controversial. And I'm sure many readers may not like what I am going to say. It may even upset some, but I am guessing the people that get upset, are most likely the ones that are guilty of what I am writing about. It is about an issue that I feel needs to be addressed based on the conversations over the last few years with many work at home moms. These moms in business have become frustrated by how other work at home moms can seem to indirectly affect their business.
Unfortunately, many work at home moms seem to fail to realize that they are business owners, and thus should be acting like business owners. Those who do not, have continued to give the term "Work at Home Mom" a bad rap. |

How to Replace Your Sales Script with a Conversation
| |
| Dear Ari,
My name is Ben Cross and I’m in the network marketing business. As you know, in network marketing we sell two things: the product of the company we represent and the business opportunity for others to get involved in the business. |

How to Cold Call without a Script
| |
| Linear step-by-step sales scripts have done a lot to give selling a bad name. Not because they don’t “work”, actually some people who use cold calling scripts actually do make some sales. The problem is even if you’re a good-hearted businessperson, scripts make it almost impossible for you to avoid sounding like a “salesperson.” This is a serious problem because most people respond to a sales agenda with something like, “Uh oh, I’m about to be sold something. How fast can I get this person off the phone?” If we turn away from the artificial beginning of a sales script, and approach cold calling in a different way, then we’re likely to get different responses. |

Should You Use Sales Letters Before You Cold Call

How to Generate New Business Telling People What You Do

Many small business owners and independent professionals repeatedly miss great opportunities to generate new business or develop leads by answering the "what do you do?" question with a poorly crafted or completely unplanned answer. Using Influence to Gain Commitment: Are Men and Women Really That Different?
| |
| Do men and women lead differently in the workplace? Based on much of the research, the short answer is “yes.” Although the differences often align with the stereotype that women lead with a more interpersonal style and men with a more task-oriented style, it appears that gender does play a role in leadership style and preferences. |

And the demographic make-up of this group is not much different from normal residential subdivisions and apartment complexes. |

Dumb Jocks … Or Smart Athletes?
| |
| We all know the stereotype. The great athlete didn't spend much time honing his intellectual skills; instead, all of his efforts were spent on the athletic field and thus, he tends to be lacking in the brains department. Like all stereotypes, this idea does not encompass all athletes, but still seems to be pervasive, especially among football players, where we all chuckle about the easy courses they take in college, etc. For example, it seems like 90 % of football players are Sociology majors, often the easiest curriculum at the university. However, some new research cited in Scientific American is stereotype breaking.
