The Ultimate Hustler: Russell Simmons is Born
| |
| The man whose name today has become synonymous with hip-hop and the tough urban streets was born on October 4, 1957 into a comfortable middle class family in Queens, New York. The middle son of three boys, Simmons’ father worked as a teacher for the local board of education while his mother worked in the city recreation department. |

Lesson #4: Learn to See a Problem for its Potential
| |
| When Ray moved from New York City back to her hometown of Lake George, New York, she was not quite sure what life had in store for her yet. She had had some success as a food buyer, but knew that was not what she wanted to be doing for the rest of her life. All she knew was that she was tired of life in the big city, and went back home to figure things out. Little did she know that it would be a life-changing decision for her. |

What Do You Do?
| |
| New York has always been a career-oriented city. If one does not have a career, they will make one up rather than apologize for being a housewife, or home-maker. It’s only because I had a wonderful New York socialite for a mother-in-law that I ran smack into this. She wanted so much to expose me to her side of life. And loving her the way I did, I made myself fully pliable.

2.5 Living and working in the urban informal economy: Working Out of Poverty
| |
| Street vendors in Mexico City; rickshaw pullers in Calcutta; jeepney
drivers in Manila; garbage collectors in Bogotá; and roadside barbers in Durban
– those who work on the streets or in the open air are the more visible
occupational groups in the informal economy. The streets of cities, towns,
and villages in most developing countries – and in many developed countries
– are lined with barbers, cobblers, garbage collectors, waste recyclers, and
vendors of vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, snack foods, and a myriad of nonperishable
items ranging from locks and keys to soaps and detergents, and
clothing. In many countries, head-loaders, cart pullers, bicycle peddlers,
rickshaw pullers, and camel, bullock, or horse-cart drivers jostle to make
their way down narrow village lanes or through the maze of traffic on city
streets. |

Sales Training – Remember Your First Sales Success
| |
| The first recognized automobile show in the United States was held at New York City’s Madison Square Garden New York in November, 1900. Much like a first car show, your first sale was in the planned approach and applied training mode. What was your first sale like? If you have yet to make your first sale, then that is your goal. |

Barack Obama Election Ushers in A Different World
| |
| This week I was interviewed by Dominic Carter of New York 1, on his program called Inside City Hall. New York 1 is an all-news program that is popular in New York City, and Dominic Carter is someone I have a great deal of respect for. He should have a national show, but then New York would miss out on his full time and dynamic presence here. He describes me as “a man not known for keeping his opinions to himself” and the interview spanned two consecutive nights. |

Highs and Lows of Living

| Carrie Bradshaw and Sex in the City in New York, does not have quite the same ring as Linda Sage and Sex in the City of Quesada....but there again who knows! That probably sounds as exciting to somebody in rain drenched down town Glasgow or Margate (not that I have anything personal against these two places or people from there) but all things are relative! |
