Performance appraisal meetings between boss and subordinate are too often disastrous encounters in which anxiety is generated in both parties, the motivation and trust the boss generated throughout the year are undermined, and employee dissatisfaction with his/her work and the company is planted. Feedback or look ahead?
Leaders and people spend surprising amount of time on giving and taking feedback. But feedback sessions can be counter productive due to the blame games and time lost. Counselling Employees To Build on Strengths
A current management fad is that we only truly improve by building on our strengths. Peter Drucker started this trend back in the fifties, but it has become increasingly popular in the last decade or so, especially with the writings of Marcus Buckingham, et al. This article provides some helpful pointers on counselling employees and subordinates to magnify their strengths and minimize their weaknesses.

The Differences Between Management and leadership

Think Like a Steward, Perform Like a Patriot
Political correctness – at least the contorted, silly version – is not high on my list of obligatory behaviors. I’ve certainly never deliberately used language likely to offend or disrespect, but I generally refuse to participate in society’s love affair with euphemisms. For me, a garbage collector is a garbage collector, not a “sanitation engineer.” Collecting garbage may not be glamorous, but it’s a necessary and honorable occupation. If my garbage collector went on strike I’d miss him a lot sooner than I’d miss a sportscaster or politician who walked out on the job. But there’s at least one verbal adjustment that I gladly make. In describing someone’s employee or assistant, I no longer use the term “subordinate.” More >>

Nuturing Employee Engagement in Flat Organizations
Established organizations continue to flatten the organizational pyramid through eliminating managerial layers and upping the subordinate/superior ratio from the classic 6:1 to 12:1 and higher. Newer companies stay flat from the get-go. One consequence is that a traditional workplace acknowledgement - the promotion - is becoming rarer as opportunities for internal upward mobility are reduced.

Delegate to Significantly Increase Your Success
Delegation refers to the assignment of responsibility to another person in order for that one to carry out a chosen project. It allows staff members to develop their skills to full potential and entrusts authority to someone else. You are giving that person the right to act independently, under the power of your name and your firm. You are held responsible in delegation because you are recommending this subordinate as a capable leader. The staff member has the right to react to situations, making his or her own decisions, and not being required to report back to you for verification or advice.

How to Be a Sales Coach
My belief is that all sales representatives should be coached on an ongoing basis. It is a form of mentoring that enables ongoing dialogue between the manager and the subordinate so that feedback on performance doesn't occur only when there is a problem. Nor should it occur and only one time of the year-the performance review. Moreover it allows for excellent sales work and customer service to be recognized, supported, exploited and then finally conveyed to others.
