Wary of the increasing popularity of television and radio, Turner decided to purchase the struggling Atlanta-based television station WJRJ in 1969. He renamed Turner Advertising to Turner Communications Group and began plans for realizing his grander vision. Just six months later, Turner purchased WRET, a similarly weak station based in North Carolina and in four years managed to make a profit of $1 million. Turner had bought the rights to classic black and white films, and by airing these he was able to increase his number of viewers dramatically. The Rise to Stardom of the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel
Thursday night in Orlando Florida at the United Numismatists convention with the Heritage auction featured rare coins but starred the 1913 Liberty Head nickel. This coin has a very interesting history behind it being it was the first coin auctioned at six figures. Which was in 1972 for 100,000 dollars the sale was brokered by Abe Kosoff. And the owner at that time was Edwin Hydeman the coin was sold to Worldwide Coin Investments of Atlanta. But at Thursday nights auction the coin was auctioned for a hefty 3.7 million dollars.
Is there a secret formula for business success?
On the long weekend I visited a regional mall in a suburb of San Diego. The mall was full of people but not as crowded like it used to be on previous long weekends. The first time I visited this mall was in the mid eighties when it had opened. Out of nostalgia I walked by the locations where I had designed stores when the mall had first opened. Unfortunately all of those businesses closed many years ago. Walking by numerous stores, many of them selling merchandise of similar categories I began to wonder how many of these businesses are going to be around ten years from now. A question popped into my mind. Why do some businesses succeed while the others fail?
