Awakening the Giant: Tony Robbins is Born
“Success is doing what you want to do, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want,” says Tony Robbins. For the past 15 years, Robbins has been doing exactly that. As one of the most celebrated motivational speakers and life coaches in the world, Robbins has come from humble beginnings to rise to the top of his game. He not only talks about how to achieve success; with best-selling books and seminars behind him, as well as being Chairman of five private companies that together generate over half of $1 billion, Robbins has himself become a successful entrepreneur and a model of what it takes in order to achieve your dreams.

Tailor the Sale
I was watching a feature film on cable TV, It's a Great Feeling, staring Doris Day and Dennis Morgan. Doris is sitting outside the train station in Los Angeles. Three little Mexican children approach her with their musical instruments. They offer to play a song for her for ten cents . . . or leave for 15 cents.

A Champion is Born: The Early Years of Earvin “Magic” Johnson
At 49 years old, Magic Johnson’s accomplishments stretch as far and wide as the many basketball courts he has conquered in his career. From transforming the Los Angeles Lakers into a championship team, to living with HIV, to launching a multi-million dollar business empire, Johnson has overcome numerous stereotypes in creating his own multi-faceted success.

Lesson #3: Make Sure You Are Not Missing the Market
Johnson opened up his first movie theatre in the Los Angeles inner-city area of Baldwin Hills. It was an area notorious for being home to the Bloods and Crips gangs, and everybody around him kept telling Johnson he was crazy.

Bookkeeping and Home Remodelling
Remoddeling your home can be a popular way of adding value to a property, so long as the refurbishment is done with care. A recent inspection of a detached house in a local suburb revealed a potential ticking time-bomb. The vendor had put in a great deal of time and energy in remodellinmg this simple three bedroon house, and the results looked very presentable. So much so that the vendor had received a firm contract for a prospective purchaser, subject to a report from a local Building Inspector. And then things turned sour.

A COURTROOM WITH A VIEW
“Oh, no! Just my luck,” I fumed. I was just selected as a juror in a criminal case downtown Los Angeles. Like the jurors described in the LA Times article a few months ago, I was not happy thinking about how this was going to interfere with my work as a small business owner.

Keeping Fear Alive
As an example of how pervasive the word fear has become in our daily lives, on the front page of this morning’s (10/11) Los Angeles times, two story headings caught my attention. One said “Cost Fears Cited in Fire Delay” and the other screamed “Fear and mistrust rule in high-stakes Iraqi politics.”

Is there a secret formula for business success?
On the long weekend I visited a regional mall in a suburb of San Diego. The mall was full of people but not as crowded like it used to be on previous long weekends. The first time I visited this mall was in the mid eighties when it had opened. Out of nostalgia I walked by the locations where I had designed stores when the mall had first opened. Unfortunately all of those businesses closed many years ago. Walking by numerous stores, many of them selling merchandise of similar categories I began to wonder how many of these businesses are going to be around ten years from now. A question popped into my mind. Why do some businesses succeed while the others fail?

Work Hours
I thought about that many times in the next few years as I tried to find how many work hours were “enough” for me. When I was president of the National Association of Women Business Owners Los Angeles Chapter, the first motion I put on the table at the first Board of Directors meeting was this: “I move that there will now be thirty-six hours in every day.” It was seconded in a heartbeat, and passed unanimously, amid riotous laughter.
