| “Organizations that already have a technology driven program in place or have just recently implemented one still surprise me with their significant interest in the dramatic changes in procurement methodologies and practices. But rather than focusing learning on new and emerging technologies, today’s procurement professionals seek insights into the actual processes that drive their enterprises. The impetus behind this change is largely the result of the fallout from the consistently high level of e-procurement initiative failures. Industry studies for the period 2001-2005 indicate 75-85% of all programs fail to achieve the promised results. (Editor’s Note: the rate of failure continues today, with some industry pundits suggesting that ERP-centric programs miss the mark as much as 90-95% of the time.) |

Yes Virginia! There is more to e-procurement than software! (Part 1)

| My recent post on the series of interviews I had with Ariba garnered considerable interest and feedback. By far the most interesting (and insightful) comments came from the Commonwealth of Virginia. What was compelling about the Virginia response was their willingness to provide a perspective from what they referred to as the “other side of the fence.” What was refreshing is that the subsequent interview revealed an extremely capable group of people whose passion for procurement was only rivaled by their commitment to a vision. A vision that was centered on gaining a thorough understanding of the processes that defined the Commonwealth’s procurement practice as well as the unique requirements of a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders.

A is for Advertising

| When I first started Exceptional Thinking, just about everybody told me that I should do some advertising and to be honest, that’s what I thought I should do too. After all, that’s what businesses do to promote their products and services don’t they?
So, dutifully I advertised. First in a business magazine that resulted in nothing, then in a local community magazine – again nothing and then finally (I was learning my lesson at this point) in the local paper. Nothing there either.

| Neuroscience can now tell us a lot about optimal learning processes. At the recent NeuroLeadership Summit in Boston, October 2010, Lila Divachi talked about a way to ensure memories stick for AGES. Using the accronym AGES, she talks through the neuroscience of Attention, Generation, Emotion and Spacing as the keys to improving memory rentention from training.
