A while ago, I wrote a short post for small business owners and managers called “Building a Sustainable Infrastructure”. In it, I touched briefly on the idea of leveraging your time and energy by addressing problems and challenges from the standpoint of sustainability, or how to solve problems for good, using the least possible amount of time and energy. This seems to be a topic of great interest and value for many of my clients, so I thought I’d finally give it some of the attention it truly deserves.

Ordinary people in apparently ordinary homes across Australia have already cut 41% and more off their electricity bills, 56% off their homes CO2 emissions, and saved hundreds of litres of water every day. (More than enough to fill up your spa bath!)
What is the Definition of a Green Home?
The term green home is being used more and more often in the residential building industry, but what does it really mean. According to the Green Building Council of Australia a green house is "a high performing home that is energy and water efficient, has good indoor air quality, uses environmentally sustainable materials and also uses the building site in a sustainable manner".
Examples of Sustainable Development
Sustainable development was coined in 1987 by the Bruntland Commission where they defined it as, 'development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'. Since then, sustainable development theory has been greatly expanded and these ideas have been utilised around the world. The need for development to become more sustainable is important, as many of the planet's ecosystems are degraded.
Sustainability Driven Innovation
Sustainable innovations are creating new business models, opening up new markets and providing competitive advantages. Sustainable innovation is also improving profitability. Companies around the world are demonstrating how innovative sustainable practices are bettering their bottom line. A focus on sustainability is enabling organisations to innovate, differentiate themselves and succeed. Although sustainable practices were once dismissed for being too costly, increasing numbers of companies are coming to the realization that sustainable innovations are a gateway to growth. Visionary business leaders who anticipate the winds of change and creatively develop sustainable products and processes will thrive in the rapidly changing economic landscape.
Your Renewable Energy
Are you fueling your life and passions with “renewable energy”? Renewable Energy is considered to: be energy generated from natural resources; or energy that is replenished at the same rate it is used; energy coming from sources that can be replenished; or even energy produced from inexhaustible sources. As I thought about this topic and thought about Winter in Michigan, staying indoors or bundling up to go out, I was reminded that Spring will be here soon.

Green Power; A Home Built Headache?
One of the primary focuses of anyone looking to live a greener lifestyle is of course, energy. Energy consumption is something that we simply cannot avoid. At home and at work, we are almost always using up some form of energy. The goal of many people ( and hopefully yourself) is to find alternative energy sources for the energy we need. Ideally, this green power source should not only be more environmentally friendly, it should also be cheaper than the current energy source. So just where do we find these alternative energy sources?
