\"You\'re an idiot if you don\'t start an Internet company right now\"
| |
| The following comes from my friend James Altucher's latest TheStreet.com Internet Review (subscribers-only) newsletter. He quotes a highly successful non-Internet entrepreneur friend recently saying to him as follows: |

If you’re a new denizen of the World Wide Web, you would want to know which browser best suits your online needs, but chances are, you’ve already been warned off Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. This is not just because of IE’s poor track record as a browser, but also no concrete changes being made to newer versions, despite Microsoft one of the biggest players in the market. So, we decided to debate why newer browsers are much more preferable when compared to IE one by one so as to make your choice easier for you. |

As the net becomes more interactive and users gain more decisiveness on what is and isn't "quality content," building links using social bookmarking sites continue to pop up to serve virtually every known online niche.

Kenya’s Second BarCamp
| |
| I’ve been impressed to see the developers and bloggers from Kenya and South Africa taking the time to create gatherings where they can pass on knowledge - everyone ends up profiting from the experience. The techies in Nairobi have just concluded their 2nd BarCamp this year (the first was in March). |

The importance of networking
| |
| This morning at 7.30am the Kenya ICT Board (www.ict.go.ke) held an open forum for the Kenya BPO & Contact Centre Society an umbrella organisation for all things outsourcing. I was to make a short presentation on some of the work we are doing on their portal, but I arrived a few minutes late so I wasn't slotted in, even though I was disappointed having worked on the powerpoint the previous night I opted to stay and hear what was to be said. |

Stop Throwing Cans!
| |
| Two months ago, I had the pleasure of working with the technical training group for one of my clients. You know these guys. They are the techies who teach your customers how to use the software and operate the equipment we sell. They often come along on demos just to make sure we don’t make total fools of ourselves. Unfortunately, too often we fear that they will stray from their role and start talking. Who knows what will happen then!

Can a Techie Ever Understand a Customer?
| |
| At the recent ProductCamp in Austin, I heard a well-respected researcher make the following comment: ‘Techies will never understand customers.' That's quite a statement. And it's false.
I used to run a tech company. We employed 48 techies, so I guess I can qualify as knowing a bit how they think. As they began doing their work as project managers, programmers, and systems designers, I heard them frequently say: "Customers are stupid. They tell me what they want, and then when I give it to them they don't want it." |
