Africa needs a technology bubble
| |
| According to the WSJ, silicon valley is on the brink of another technology bubble bust like what was witnessed in 1999. According to the article the emergence of "strange" website names such as Orgoo and businesses whose sole purpose is to sell t-shirts bearing the logos of internet companies(check out Startup Schwag) is evidence of a bubble and its eminent bust. I cannot even pretend to understand the dynamics of silicon valley, so I won't even argue with the writer of the article, but I'm left wondering when will Africa expereience it's own technology bubble? |

Is Your Mission Statement Written by Dilbert
| |
| There’s no more painful corporate ritual than the every-few-years mission statement revision. Here’s where a group of well-meaning people gather for several meetings, markers in hand, to torturously wordsmith themselves into agreement. Does this mission statement typically fire up everyone? Does it fire up anyone? The employees take the t-shirts home to their kids. The gold frames will be filed, roundly. There is no pulse-quickening. Instead, employees, customers, suppliers – everyone except execs and the authors themselves -- see the mission statement as vague, irrelevant, and disconnected from real work. The corporate Ginsu won’t even cut a tomato. |

| Promotional Products – not limited to businesses alone
Promo products is generally brings to mind small giveaway items like pens, calendars, t-shirts offered to lure customers during trade shows, special business events, holidays; which are meant to promote visibility and recognition of a particular brand. The underlying purpose is to say thanks to the loyal customers and express appreciation towards them for being the drivers of the success of business. Undoubtedly, if the gift is creative and comes at an opportune time; it is valued and remembered by the receiver; hence fulfilling the very goal of offering it.

Culture and Motivation
| |
| You have probably asked yourself, ¡§How do people become motivated to perform at peak levels over a sustained period of time?¡¨ Perhaps you found yourself coming up with incentive programs that reward based on money, vacations, or perhaps merchandise in an effort to motivate your employees. The reality is, motivation comes from within each of us is not generated by picnics or T-shirts. As a leader, do not seek to motivate your employees; rather, focus on building a culture of trust where individuals make the choice to become motivated. |

G is for Gizmos
| |
| One question that I often get asked is “Should I buy some promotional products for my business?” By this, people mean should they buy pens, car stickers, calendars, t-shirts and so on. The theory behind is that these items will be used by people and will remind people of the business every time they look at them.
My argument on the other hand goes like this. It’s all very well buying these items, but as they can be very expensive, it depends what you’re going to use them for.
