A.S.A.P. Branding” Part III: Why Every Brand Needs an “Adjective
| |
| You may be wondering why, as my headline states, every brand platform “needs an adjective.” By this I mean every brand needs to own a word in the mind of consumers. Why? Let me illustrate with peanut butter - Jif peanut butter, to be specific. For decades, television ads for the Jif brand ended with the tagline, “Choosy Mothers Choose Jif.” Obviously, the branding strategists behind Jif hoped to associate this word “choosy” with their peanut butter. (Notice how superior product quality is implied, not stated, through use of the folksy term, “choosy.”) Today, Jif’s tagline remains virtually unchanged. Talk about a successful branding strategy: Jif has been the leading peanut butter brand in the United States for over 27 years. |

Lesson #4: Give Your Business a Little Brand Aid
| |
| “Originally, it was Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web, but we settled on Yahoo!,” says Yang. “It is a pretty recognizable brand name.” Despite Filo’s admission that he was “not crazy about the name at first,” he now concedes that they made the right choice. “It grew on me,” says Filo, who is now grateful they selected a name that is “so memorable and that conveys the sense of fun involved in all this, the sense of adventure. This is what really distinguishes our site.” |

Crafting Copy That Compels Your Customers to Act
| |
| Do you regularly guide prospects towards a sale?
What are you asking?
One of the best pieces of advice I can offer when creating copy is to always include an offer, otherwise known as a call to action.
What do you want your customers to do? Don’t assume they’ll come to your website or storefront just because you’ve told them you’re there. Results driven advertising, marketing and promotions take more planning and effort than an “If I build it they will come” approach.
Give your prospects and customers a reason to support your business. Invite them in to your storefront, request they visit your website and be sure to ask them to take action by giving them a compelling reason to do so.
What are you “asking” your clients and prospects to do?

THE THREE R’S OF SERVICE BRANDING: REACH, RECOGNITION, AND REPUTATION
| |
| By Robert Croston
Think about your most recent branding campaign. Were your television ads as successful as you'd like them to be? Perhaps the billboards didn't create the recognition that you were looking for, but your online ads on Yahoo! and AOL worked quite well. Did you pick the right professional athlete to represent your firm's services?
If you're reading this far, and you work at most service businesses, you probably think I'm nuts. You don't do any of this.
Well, maybe you're a big firm and you do (kudos to you), or you've tried something here and there. But in most of our service business realities, advertising-as-a-primary-branding-vehicle is not the norm. And it shouldn't be.
