As Seen On TV: Popeil Goes From Poverty to Prime Time
Popeil now split his time evenly between working for his father and working for himself, selling goods on Maxwell Street. It did not matter what he was selling – shoeshine spray, plastic plant kits – Popeil just wanted to sell. “Through selling I could escape from poverty and the miserable existence I had with my grandparents,” he says. “I didn’t have to be poor the rest of my life.”

Taking a Bet on BET: Johnson Jumps onto the Small Screen
Johnson was in a business meeting at the NCTA when he met a businessman who wanted to start a television station for the elderly. “I said, hmmm, let me see that,” recalls Johnson. “So I looked at it, and I said, wherever he had elderly I crossed out and put black people. Black people are a certain demographic, black people are poorly depicted on television, so on, and so forth.”

Lesson #4: Every Opportunity is Yours for the Taking

Today's rant - TV Sales Managers
TV Sales Managers, it is up to you to change your current job. You are in charge of Sales for your television station – national, local, regional, online, and/or all of the above. Are you spending enough time looking to the future and developing a plan to increase sales in that future?

The Courageous Captain: Turner Takes Television By Storm
Wary of the increasing popularity of television and radio, Turner decided to purchase the struggling Atlanta-based television station WJRJ in 1969. He renamed Turner Advertising to Turner Communications Group and began plans for realizing his grander vision. Just six months later, Turner purchased WRET, a similarly weak station based in North Carolina and in four years managed to make a profit of $1 million. Turner had bought the rights to classic black and white films, and by airing these he was able to increase his number of viewers dramatically. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had also changed their rules to allow cable providers to import signals from far-away stations, which Turner would soon begin to take advantage of.

Finger Lickin’ Good: Sanders Opens Kentucky Fried Chicken
In 1930, Sanders opened up a service station along U.S. 25, a busy highway which ran through Kentucky. It was not just a regular gas station. When people stopped to refill their gas tanks, Sanders made sure they refilled their stomachs as well. With home-cooked meals that his wife and children helped to prepare, Sanders’ first venture into the fast-food industry had begun. His station might have been simple, with only one table and six chairs, but it was a start.

Business Ethics Cannot Ignore the 800# Gorilla
Pick up any newspaper, watch any television network, listen to any radio station or scan the Internet and you can learn a myriad of reasons about why the U.S. is in its current economic crisis. After hearing or reading hundreds of economists to political pundits, I have yet to hear the real problem why our economy is in its current fix.

Why A Top Sales Manager Needs To Be On All His Reps’ “Pre-sets”
You have to be more popular than Howard Stern. You also have to be cooler than Opie and Anthony too. Why? Because one of the most critical elements to successful sales management is to always make sure you are tuned into the radio frequency of your salespeople. Here's why. There's only one radio station that your sales executives like to listen to and that radio station is: WIFM. (You might say WIIFM, but let's not get too technical here...). This is the "What's-In-It-For-Me" radio frequency. This is the only station they pay any attention to and if you're not broadcasting on it all the time, 24-7, then your sales reps are gonna switch you over to some other station on XM or Sirius radio...or worse yet, turn off the radio completely!

Why a Top Sales Manager Must Always "Tune Into the Right Frequency"

TV Stations –9 Basic Social Media Suggestions
One thing certainly has changed this past year. I am no longer asked by TV Stations if they need to be in the social media space! Now I get asked, "How do we do it and Facebook or twitter?" The good news is TV Stations have realized the train left the station. If TV stations are to remain relevant they need to reach out to their viewers and establish an entirely new relationship with them. It is no longer a one-way street of "push and pray" content providing. So what's a station to do with limited resources and, for many, lack of understanding? Here are a few very basic suggestions:
